Hand from Global Poker so no HUDS – 23 players left, 27 got paid. Pay jump @18th but no significant jump until final table.

Level – 800/1600/160 – Hero ~ 18.5K

UTG limps, folds to Hero on Button with A♦J♦ Hero jams ~ 11bb

Is this a standard spot to jam ~ 11bb over the limp?

Hey NMgrind3r,

I think your spot is super-standard. Well, yeah, if you have any read on the V that any time he limps UTG has aces, yeah, you can definitely fold here. But you have to be 100% sure about this.

Imagine that there are 1600(bb) + 800(sb) + 160 x 9(antes) + 1600(limp of the V) on the pot already, so that equals 5440 – that if the table is full, which you don’t mention, but let’s presume like that. That represents almost 30% of your stack, and you have only 2 people in front of you to take a decision. If you take the spot, you will increase your stack to almost 24k with very small effort.

If V is an unknown, yeah, it’s definitely a shove. If your V plays like 50/10 after 100 hands, yeah, again is a shove. But if your V plays something like 3/2, you could consider about a trap from him.

Thanks rustyrst! I felt like this was a correct shove but still new to these situations as I mainly have a live cash game background. I recently downloaded ICMIZER to work on these short stack spots.

Getting ICMizer is a great move, I find it’s by far the most user friendly program for preflop work. Solvers and HRC help more with deeper stacks, but in my experience nothing will help your push/fold game advance more than ICMizer.  I’ll pass along some advice that helped me get more from it: try to run every spot with at least 3 range breakdowns for main villain. You can lock in standard calling ranges for player yet to act (although playing around with these can still add some value), but I was surprised to see how much adjusting open ranges (or limp range here) and call off ranges by as little as 1% can affect the recommendations, especially when running ICM calcs. I tend to find running Nash equilibrium and then tightening villain ranges where appropriate (sometimes drastically) is a good starting point, but that’s just one approach.

I somehow still feel a bit foolish when I make shoves like this and villain snap calls with AA, but most players will have a balanced (or just bad) enough limping range that shoving is by far your most profitable move. I think having some overlimps here could be reasonable (hands like KTs/J9s/98s) although hard to balance, but I think hands like AJ/KQs/99 want to be shoving. FWIW, I’d be shoving AJs here over a CO Iso-raise, but maybe finding a tight fold vs earlier positions isolating.

I haven’t purchased anything yet so I’m just going off the 3 free calculations a day. Plan on purchasing in the next few weeks. Thank you for all the feedback on ICMizer! I was going to make a forums post in the near future about a lot of the stuff you covered in your reply above. This helps out a lot!

Im shoving this with or without stats…unless Ive got specific notes that V is capable of limping aces or kings, and even then with 11 bbs Im just all in here forever.
