All,
I had a HORRIBLE weekend of poker. I am just starting to get back into the online scene a little bit and find I have let one of my old leaks back into my game. I seem to be able to build a stack mid way through a majority of my tournaments, generally I am in the top 5% of the field after half the field has been eliminated, then something happens, big stack seems to go to my head. I over think hands, always think people are making moves on me so I put them to the ultimate test, and it bites me. I had a good friend tell me I am giving the average player too much credit, just because it looks like a squeeze, it doesn't necessarily mean it is a play.
For instance, I stuggled for the first 2.5 hours of the Lock major yesterday and had around 14-22 BBs for a while. I then went on a heater and got my stack to 67BB by the end of the 3rd hour. A NICE stack, I was 16th out of 450 players. Instead of continuing to bob and weave, I was out 5 hands later. I more or less did the SAME thing the day before when I was poised to make a deep run in a different tourney.
This is costing me WAY too much $$$$, and it isn't variance, I am beating myself.
After giving myself an honest evaluation, I feel I play a 13-25BB stack rather well, but once I get a big stack, I feel as though every pot should run through me, hence I have MAJOR (Matusow type) blowups. I need to stop this but I still want to make sure I do not lay down…..
How do you shift gears when you finally have a big stack? Obviously UBER AG is not working.
WHERE IS THE FOLD BUTTON!?

Prolly the one thing I can say is you don’t have to win every pot. You are allowed to cbet and then give up occasionally.
If you lose a hand with a good stack, I think it’s worthwhile to just tighten up for a bit and make your next hand for value. I seems like you aren’t aware enough of your own image

At least you recognise you have a problem / leak, first step. Asking for help good 2nd step.
Perhaps back it up a little and play as if you had a 25bb stack. Just the occasional extra steal and 3 bet, but try not to get carried away, keep your percieved image as solid.

it was something i struggled with quite a lot, and probably still do to a certain extent.
sometimes you are on 60bb and crushing by winning lots of pots without showdown, and then you lose a medium size pot when your triple barrel gets called or you tried something else that didnt work, and you are down to 40bb. then two hands after you try the same thing again. that is the one that always gets you into trouble because the table has seen you were getting a bit frisky and will call you down a lot lighter than before, because we havent adjusted enough to the previous hand that we lost

Makes sense benny…
On a side note, I watched some of BDP5s deepstack live sweat vids yesterday, then last night played a small $5 – 100 man tourney on lock, took second. $$$$ was not much at all, but I was happy I was able to incorporate the stuff I had just seen. I still made some moves, I just took far fewer spots. I let some pass and started believing people in certain situations and in turn, FOLDING. Yes, I found the fold button!
As a side note, I was in the top 5 from 45 people on, and was the chip leader on the last three tables until we were heads up.
Thanks TPE nation!
Congrats on the score! But don't go ahead of thinking you've fixed the leak just because of it. The plays we make and style we play has a way of burning their way into our mind, so if we want to change them we have to make a concious effort to change them over time. If we forget and stop focusing on changing them they quickly return to how they used to be.
Check out my "going pro" poker journal, updated weekly with wins, losses and my progress as a player:
I get in trouble when I try too hard to defend my BB from active players. It's ok to 3bet light and cbet, but once you start feeling like you have to triple barrel, things can get spewy quick. I dont know if it's the proper adjustment, but I tend to let the guy steal my BB as long as I can steal some BBs from weaker players myself. That helps me maintain my stack and allows me to 3bet them when my hands are a little better than 76o.
Dont get into an expensive game of chicken with the other bullies if there are one or two kids whose lunch money you can take without much of a fight. Confront the bullies occassionally to build an image and then take them down once you pick up a hand.

Agree with all of the above loxxii. Especially when your have a good stack that doesn’t require you to fight after every single pot

Great analogy that is spot on! Nice work
Another thing I am doing right now is just waiting around to get a better read on the table when I have a huge stack like 50bb+ when the average is around 25-30bb. Instead of taking marginal steal spots, I can spot the weakest players and the most active players. I pass on a lot of opens because the blinds aren't that helpful to me when im that deep. Instead, I target loose opens to 3bet if I am sure the guy will fold pre or to the cbet. Until you have the goods, stay away from people that cant let a hand go.

Got another 2nd………granted it is on lock……and not a big pay day at all, but 2 deep runs in a week (played probably 6-8 tournies) is far better than what the results were prior to starting this thread. Again, I was chip leader from 27 left until the FT, and dropped just below chip leader with 5 left, only to regain after a few hands. It stayed that way until we were heads up.
I need to work on BR mgmt as well. I was playing in locks bigger tournies, and was donating too much. I plan on sticking with the smaller buy ins, 22 and below, see if my results continue then take a shot if my results warrant the buy in. In essence, work up to the 109, 215 buy ins vs makin a deposit every time I feel like playing and shooting for the moon. If not, the wife will pull this rug out from under me, and rightfully so I might add!
