Hey guys,

This hand confused me, and I don't know whether I played well either preflop or post.

This is a $4 + $1 bounty game nearing the bubble with about 60 remaining out of a 300 player field.  Blinds are at 400/800/80 and I sit in the BB with 5400 after posting BB.

Stacks are:

UTG) 30k

UTG+1) 1,800 – Villain1, no reads but he's short as heck

MP1) 10,857 – Villain2, Alf222, seemingly a loose passive player, after 141 hands playing 41/9/2.2 with %29 limp and %100 Cbet, 2 of 2.  I have a note that he did once flat an all in for about half his stack preflop with QQ with several players behind.

MP2) 5k

CO) 39k

BTN) 3k

SB) 6k

BB) 5,460 after posting – Hero. I am also short and the table has few reads on me.

Hero is dealt Aclub7club

1 fold, UTG+1 is all in, MP1 calls 1800, 4 folds,

Hero?

I feel this may have been an easy shove but I'm not sure.  Against any one of these villains I feel fine but against both I'm not sure.

Villain1's range is very very wide, probably 2/3 of the deck.

Villain2's range is what I was uncertain about.  I will say all pocket pairs, all suited Aces, A5o+, all suited broadway, KJo+, K9s, but of course all of these hands might be played differently by this player.  I could get him to fold but then I'm not guaranteed a pot at all because I still need to hold up against V1.  I believe a shove is +EV, but then I realized it's only 1000 to call for a pot of 5040 which are pretty great odds.  I was wondering if a mainly fit or fold line could minimize losses while still managing to win a decent about of the time when flops are favorable.  I even considered a fold but decided it was not the best.

Hero calls 1000

Flop (6040): Jdiamond7heart3club

Well, I landed pretty well but not well enough to be confident.  Maybe this is why a shove would have been better?  It seems against V2's range I'm doing pretty well, only concerned with Jack holdings, sets and over pairs to sevens.  It would be hard to get worse hands to put much more in the pot by betting, but the pot is already larger than my remaining stack, so I feel pushing V2 out and taking it down vs V1 would be great.   Even if V2 has AT or something that I've outflopped, I don't think pushing him out is bad – is it?  Also if he has 88-TT he may fold to my shove.

Checking could get V2 to spew off for some reason, but with one player all in, I don't see it as too likely.  Also turns and rives are likely to be ugly for me so I don't really want to check for this reason as well.

Hero is all in for 4,460

Any comments are appreciated.

I agree it's somewhat close b/w calling and shoving pre. The looser MP is, the better shoving is. Given that you're a heavy favorite in the main pot, pushing him off of KJ is a great outcome for you, though obviously getting called isn't bad either. Remember you're also increasing your odds of winning the bounty. The main virtue in calling that I see is that you might be able to get some additonal fold equity on flops you miss.

Given that the pot is bigger than your stack and V's range will be wide, you really shouldn't be check-folding many if any flops, so I wouldn't think in terms of cutting losses.

As played, I don't think shoving accomplishes much. Yes, getting him to fold AT is bad for you (he has like 12% equity), and given that you aren't going to fold, you don't really have to worry about the board running out bad. I mean, there's no one card that massively improves his range, even though some of them could improve individual hands. You even have backdoor clubs. Also you aren't going to make him fold better or any hand with significant equtiy, the only question is how to get him to put it in when he's crushed. Checking has got to be the best way to start, then you can bet turn if he checks back.

I think you are focusing too much on what you want him to do (FOLD!) rather than how your action will influence his range and your expected value. When he folds, he was probably drawing pretty slim anyway, so you don't really accomplish much with your shove.
