Local live Tourney – 20 players for 50 Euro buy in. Mid stages.

Villian is a competent player that knows me well.

I have 40,000 chips and Villian about 30,000

Blinds  300/600

folds to me in mid position and I raise to 1,800 with JJ

Villian next to act calls.

Flop is 2 7 9 rainbow (3690)

Hero bets 2000

Villian calls

Turn 4 ( 7690)

Hero ?

I presume I should bet here or should I check and bet the river?

I don't see a reason to slow down, if you get a check behind, you risk letting the villian catch up.  Flatting out of position does seem a tad bit odd, but I feel that we can confidentely continue to bet our hand here and might be able to get value from top pair, or even Ace/King high. I would barrel again around 2650, and re-evaluate on the river. If no scare card comes on the river, I say we can go ahead and value bet the river, too. Around $4500-$5000, just over third pot. (Personal Opinion)

That being said, I think we can safely check/call on a Q/K/A river.

Yeah you should bet on the turn but before you decide to make that bet you should ask yourself what's your value target? Which hands would you like to get value from?

Thanks Guys.

I checked the turn,

The river is a Q, (7690).    I check and villian bets 4000 – I call and he shows AQ.

I felt so stupid after this hand as I was thinking I checked when I was ahead and called a bet when I went behind.

I checked for pot control and then I called his river bet as I thought that my hand looked under repped.

Definitely bet that turn. Unless he's floating you with some crazy wide ranges you stand to gain more by getting value than you do by letting him bluff. Forget about what he ended up having, it's results-oriented to pay attention to the fact that he had AQ. Your hand did look under-repped, so calling the river once you checked turn and river was fine. He could just as easily have been valuebetting TT or T9.
