Hey
No reads.
just wondering if i should be going for 3 streets here? my value target would be JJ/TT and a hand like A8s. I doubt A8s are calling 3 streets , as for JJ/TT that's likely with the effective stacks being 50bb.
thoughts?
If your value target is JJ/TT and if you think they are going to call 3 streets why would you not go for 3 streets here?
By checking the river you are only giving villains 8x, Ax and floats a cheap showdown. Villain will only bet his flushes and bluffs, of which he probably does not have many bluffs here. I think 3 streets of value is indeed the best play.

Agree with all posts, but something that i do attempt, but not typically in early stages, if I have an opponent who I know can't help himself but attempt to bluff a river or falseley overvalue a showdown value hand on the river by betting rather than checking back is to attempt to obtain my three streets of value that way, where by check calling the third street I might obtain chips where otherwise my opponent would have folded to a third barrel. However, i would far more commonly three barrel here.

I checked because the pot was getting to big and i was thinking that a hand like A8 or k8 or watever wont call 3 streets, i thought maybe he's got a hand like 88/99 , unlikely he has any 2x in his range since he's called from UTG+2.
anyhow, i missed out on value on the river clearly.
You should never be checking “because the pot is too big”. Seems like a mental game leak to me. If your reasoning to check is because the pot is too big you then need to look at your flop and turn play, bet sizing and strategies on what to do on certain following cards as to WHY the pot got so big and how you can alter this.
88/99 should be a small part of his range here and he just as easily has combinations of TT/JJ which are going to call a river bet.

I think check/folding this river would be a mistake. Villain could end up thin value betting his TT and JJ combos hoping you have some sort of 9x or A-high hero call. I would be bet/folding this as villain is only going to raise his flushes on the river yet he is going to call a bet with hands that we beat (TT, JJ, 9x, 8x).
