i haven't played a hand for some time and overall have a tight image at the table. clunged is a really good player (pro), stats over a couple hundred hands 13/11 3b:5
if i dont bet there is no way to win this hand cause if he has nothing he will for sure bet the river and i cant call.but if i give up here i still have around 20bb and I'm alive.
but i also think my line is good to represent an A, and i'm 99% sure he does not have an ace! what do you think?

Flatting a 3bet oop w only 30bb to start the hand with isnt ideal imo. He def could be bluffing and if he has done so before and you expected him to 3bet you before you opened i'd 4bet jam ai. If you think he's strong then just fold pre. 88 is a tough hand to play oop and you'll always be playing the guessing game as the flop will often bring overcards.
In this case I see villain having AA, KK, KQ, QJ, AJ, JJ, Ax, 87s, 97s… either trapping, pot controlling or bluffing pre and turned a draw. It's hard to put villain on a narrower range mentioning villain is a pro/thinking player which really makes this hand a preflop deciscion i believe
hmm i think 4 bet jam pre is not the best option, like i said villain had also a tight image and played straight forward, nothing fancy. when he 3b i gave him a solid hand, so i think i would either race or be crushed and i dont give him much fold equity
folding was no option cause there were still ways to win this pot and if the flop is not good for me i can still lay my hand down and still continue with 25bb.
you are right 88 is a tough hand to play but after the flop i didnt much care about my hand, just what i could represent and if he has an ace or better.
when he checks back on the flop and just calls on the turn there is no way he is trapping, i mean on the flop its psbl but if he has a big hand i guess he would 90% 3b the turn.
after the turn i gave him sth like 77-jj maybe kq,qj
i fold pre
if he's more aggressive or 3betting more then 4bet jamming wouldnt be bad
as played i guess you could bluff the river here and make him fold a bunch of hands that beat us KK,JJ,TT,99 and possibly KQ,QJ
It doesnt really seem like he could have Ax here by not c betting and also not raising the turn when we could have a Q or F draw ourselves, so i guess if we bet the turn we should bet the river also.
After all he's not shown any strength post flop has he?
For what its worth here is my breakdown
I fold or Jam pre. I dont wan't to be playing a flop OOP against a thinking player this shallow. Deeper stacked i would setmine. With him only 3betting 5% i would fold
On the flop he has to be weary of your calling his 3bet. If he has an ace he's either way ahead or way behind, either way i think he's checking back with stacks this shallow. Pot controlling if he's behind and still able to get it all in by the riv if he's ahead. If he doesn't have an ace he should be cbetting to represent it and try take the pot down, unless he has KK or QQ and plans to get value from your 77 – JJ range later on. if he has 99 – JJ he would be cbetting to represent the ace and fold your 99 – KK range
The range you assign him on the turn is too wide imo. If he 3bets pre 5% then he doesn't 3bet with QJ KQ 77 88 often.
For me his play and stats are consitsent with a solid range of AA AQ AJ KK QQ. Jamming river maybe folds out KK AJ but it is too much of a risk. I check/fold, he checks back a lot of value hands and jams with nuts/air.
hmm maybe you guys are right and this wasnt the best decision to flat pre with taht hand and that stack oop. and after reading all your opinions i also think it wasnt the best line to represent a good ace. thanx it definetly helped me to see the hand from a different perspective.
though i was lucky that time, i deceided to bluff the river and he folded
