I played this hand in a 10k guaranteed, $150 buy in live tourney at my local casino. We are down to 20/190 entries at 2k/4k w/ 800 ante, 13 paid. There are only 7 players at my table. I had been at the table with the villain for about 2 orbits. There was a lot of push fold, open fold, going on. Villain was a rec player, no serious reads on him, but watched him open-fold to a few shoves and open collect a couple times since I had been at the table. I am BB (50k stack) with AsQs and villain is cut off (65k stack).
Play folds to CO who opens to 10k (consistent sizing). SB folds and I flat the 10k.
Flop comes out Ks, 6s, 8h – Villain checks. I bet 10k into 31,600. I felt like he would have led if the K hit him. I wasn’t positive about his range but was confident I had the best had preflop and after the flop. My thought process here was bet smaller hoping for a raise with the intention of breaking both arms off getting it in on a 4 bet, or on the turn if he flats.
Villain tanks for about 2 minutes and shoves.
I snap call.
What do you guys think?

Thats a fantastic question. Im looking at my notes again, I wrote “B”. Transcribed that into big blind for the post, but I must have been the button. Ultimately it was heads up to the flop and I had position.
Of course he got there on me w/ AJo, so I’ve been second guessing the play after the fact. Should I have been more weary chasing a draw vs a bigger stack on the money bubble?

You’re not on the money bubble, only 2/3 of the remaining players get paid, there’s still a long way to go. Playing conservatively from this point on is the reason so many players end up blinding out on the actual bubble. You managed to get your stack in against an opponent who is almost drawing dead, don’t let the results cloud your judgment of the hand.
That being said I still play the hand differently. At this stack size I would be shoving pre. It’s also worth noting, as well as stack sizes, that the ante in this level is 2/5 small blind. This is a real chunky ante so I’m looking to win as many pots preflop as I can at this level as there so much in the pot.

Thank you guys for the feedback. Thats a great point kmid, with only 12.5 bigs the antes alone are about 10% of my stack. Getting a fold there is an increase over 20% of my stack. Although a double up would have been great, getting away with a few steals gets the same job done in this spot.

In addition to what others have said, you weren’t “chasing a draw”. You had the best hand. With shallow stacks, it will often be the case that an unpaired hand is good enough to get all in. There’s nothing especially risky or gambly about this. For instance, I would much rather have AQ, even without the draw, than pocket 7s here.
