I recently got in a situation that was new for me, playing live in vegas. It was during the end level 9, the blinds were 800/1600 200. I had 35,000 ad was third in chips..there was a 4 way all in and 3 little stacks busted. the table that broke to fill our seats had been much more active and had busted out a lot of people and had a lot more chips in play. three people came who all had well over 150,000 chips. taking me from 3rd in chips to a distant 7th……
i guess i got sort of confused about what to do, whether or not i should take a different strategy and play my stack relative to the other stacks or continue playing a 30bb with antes strategy??? they all had a very aggressive style with 3 bb opens and i was between 2 of them who happened to be father and son….

When you say third in chips, do you mean at your table? That’s really not a useful metric to track.
If previously there were many people with 10bb or fewer, then you were effectively playing 10bb poker, even if you had more chips. Now that you have the shorter stack, you’re effectively playing 22bb poker. That’s the case whether the others have 40K or 90K or 150K or whatever.

i meant 3rd in chips at my table….. i understand about effective stacks, my issue was that the table had been playing for 2 bb opens (i was happy to conserve chips), once the new players arrived they were opening for 3 to 3.5 bb, this changed the dynamic at the table. i thought their aggressive playing style was going to cost me too much if I tried to play even one hand that i couldn’t continue with. so i shoved AJ …. unsuccessfully….

“my result left me feeling like i had made mistake…”
The tricky thing about poker is that you can’t generally tell whether or not you made a mistake based on the results. You’re right that you shouldn’t be flat calling raises with such shallow effective stacks, and AJ is generally a good hand to shove with. It’s a bit situational – I probably wouldn’t shove vs an UTG open – but probably you just got unlucky.
I would say that the players opening to 3x were actually doing you a favor. Even against 2x raises, you shouldn’t be doing a lot of calling given the effective stack size, which means that with AJ you’re probably going to shove or fold either way. When they call your shove, you win or lose the same amount regardless of how much they opened. When they fold to your shove, you win an extra BB when they are opening larger. So really, you should be grateful for the opportunity they gave you with their larger raises.
