Reading and understanding stats and stats software

Hey guys, this question is prob very elementary to most of you but that's why I'm here.  I simply don't know how to read stats or what they mean when I see they them in posts first of all.  For example, I see guys posting ” the villian is XX\XX over XXXXX hands”.  Secondly, what software are you guys using if any to moniter your opponents stats and does this software give you this info in real time during the tourney?  I play mostly micro 180s on Stars when I play online and I'm sure understanding this will help me against the random $2 tourney guy who I suspect is getting out of line.

I apologize in advance for the stakes and basic question, LOL. laugh

There are two pieces of software you can get – PokerTracker or Hold Em Manager. Based on personal experience and what I've read, Hold Em Manager has surpassed PokerTracker and is the better application to use.

It compiles a bunch of data but here's a breakdown of what you see in the forums most often.

“XXXXXXx is running 14/12/5.5”

This means the player is playing 14% of his hands, raising 12% of them, and 3-bet (re-raising) 5.5% of them.

All the information is real time. Your heads-up display will refresh and update the stats at the conclusion of each hand. You can also add and subtract data elements as you see fit once you become more familiar with it but the thing does run fine “out of the box” meaning no adjustment to settings.

I'm not an expert on them but the site already produced a video about these – if you go to the videos section and select TPE Tools in the third drop down box you'll see it. For some reason  I couldn't paste the link for you.

Best of luck 🙂

There is also a very good book that dives into the details of stats, ” Harrington on Online Cash Games”. Even though it is written for cash games it dwells deep into HUDs and stats. It is fairly new and I was impressed with his knowledge of HUDs and stats considering he is old school. FK nailed the most important stats to know. If you have a Windows based machine go with Hold em Manager, if you have a Mac and not running in Windows mode then Poker Tracker is your only option. I have both Mac and PC, I prefer Hold em Manager becuase of the add ons.  The video that RFB mentioned is a great introduction to everything, it is what help to get me started. If you have any specific questions on stats feel free to ask. Sadly, for me I am a better stats guy then poker strategy. LOL

I have PT now but I'm thinking of converting. Would it be tough to transfer all the data from there to HM?

I think you can export from PT and then you would import into HM.  Hand histories are usually universal. I will look around and see if I can find more info for you but I do believe it can be done.

Since we're talking about HEM.  Leakbuster is an app that goes with it, anyone have this and is it worth the money?  Just curious if its really helped your game at all.

Thanks praetor – I'd like to find out exactly what I have to do before I get it.

I believe leakbuster is for cash games only. You can always download the trial for a week to see if you like it but I would wait until you have a few thousand hands of cash games for it to be of any benefit.

It looks like it can be done but it is problematic for some people. You can export your database from PT under database management and then import them into HM but people have encountered errors. Your best bet would be to download the 15 day trial of holdem manager and see if it works for you that way you do not have to invest any money.
