This is from an email a friend of mine (not yet a TPE member, but I'm working on him) sent me:

Was middle of pack with around 50 bb i think.  Had like 18000, blinds 300/600.  I get 88s in mid position.  This is a new table right after break.  i raise to 1400.  One caller, then short stack for 3500 goes all in.  Folds around to me.  First caller has me covered.  I didn't think smooth call was good as I wanted to isolate.  I almost folded, which would have been okay in hindsight with one guy behind, but I shove my stack to isolate.

Thoughts?  I told him both options are certainly viable…

Hi,

I guess it depends on the positions. If he raised UTG and gets called UTG+1, flat caller can have 99+, AJ+ (trapping with AA or KK) so it's more close but if it's CO vs BTN it's a pretty easy shove imo. Depends on the profile of the flat caller too (is he calling a ton, is he a nit, is he passive, aggro…) but if it was a new table I suppose we had no info.

He can also make it 5600 and fold to a shove but it's not really great as he would lost about 1/3 of his stack.

With 18k and blinds 300/600 you would be around 30 big blinds which is a big difference than 50 and will change how I choose to proceed. So I will assume its 30 big blinds.

With no reads I think you could easily shove 88. I don’t like 3 betting cause 3 bet fold would be horrible. I think we are way ahead of the callers range and given the fact he will have position on us post flop it’s best to shove. He is flatting with a lot worse pairs, suited connectors, suited aces , broadway type hands. The only hands I’m worried about is 99, 1010 (although 1010 might always be raising).

Now with 50 bbs shoving is way too much. If you sat with over 50bb I’d flat looking to set mine.
