Question regarding my play...what do you think?

I was in the late stages of tournament (12 players left) when I got pocket 8s in the big blind.  The blinds were 1000-2000 and I had about 36000-38000 (?) in my stack.  Everyone folded to dealer who raised to 5000 (with about as many chips as me).  With 8000 plus antes in the pot, I pushed all in.  I was called and dealer button had pocket 9s.  I lost and it was on to the next tournament.  Would you have pushed or called extra 3000 and saw flop?  Was I too aggressive or was it the right play?  Just curious what others would do in the same situation, especially being so close to final table.

easy shove, villain's range should be just about any 2 cards, if he turns up a better hand here then its just a cooler.

being close to the final table means you can shove even wider i think because villain only calls you with a very tight range, in fact 99 is probably the bottom of villains calling range.

As Benny mentioned he should be raising with just about any two cards from the button, best position and easy to steal from. Every once in awhile the button will have a hand, just the nature of the beast. I would have probably shoved but it would have depended on my read. Some people may fold to a shove and other's may think it is a resteal or defensive move and call.

Yah bud, as its been said, that is an easy shove, youre ahead of him a huge amount of the time. The only way you can EVER consider folding there is if you are certain he's only calling with a pair bigger than your 88, and that's just considering. Shove those chips in with a smile on your face!!

Agreed with the above…easy shove and just unfortunate that he had 99.  It could have easily been a pair you dominate, a race against overcards or he simply folds.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.  Your feedback just affirms that I made the right move.  Sometimes you start second guessing yourself.
