Question about going with instincts

So I got done with a hand where on 3 different streets with 12 left in a tournament and I'm like 4th in chips I go against my instinct each street and proceed to go broke.  Preflop, “hey you really should squeeze here”, flop, “you know this bet sizing is different from when he was bluffing maybe you should fold”, turn, “you know this is really looking like he's setting up for a river shove you should fold”, “playing bad and going broke sounds easier under the pressure so I'll do that”.

Ok after that rant I would like to hear from all of you, do you always go with your instincts?  For me it's pretty disappointing to have had a feeling multiple times in one hand and to not have followed them, find out they were right and proceed to go broke.  Do all of you follow your instincts each and everytime and I'm just being a weak bitch?  Is this something that is normal as one's poker ability grows over time to learn to follow your gut or should it be easy to do no matter how long one has been playing?

Personally I think “instincts” are very analytical and not out of the blue hunches.  By playing thousands of tournaments and hundreds of thousands of hands, you subconsciously register and connect betting and timing patterns with hands.  So when a circumstance comes up where you say, “that feels like AK” it's because the circumstances of his play have triggered something in your mind that remembers those actions to frequently be connected with AK(at least this is what i believe, i don't have a PHD in neuroscience).  So i think your instincts are a very important part of choosing what action to take.  An example, recently I was somewhat deep in a turbo tourney, the action folded to the SB who was a very tight player.  He very quickly made it 4x.  I was in the BB with 33, and a 25bb stack i believe, perfect for the reshove.  I dragged the bar all the way to the right, hovered my mouse over the button, but something didn't add up in my mind, so i swallowed my medicine and folded (but hated it).  I hated it less when he showed me TT.  Folding there was definitely the pivotal hand of the tournament.

I agree with what was said above. Instincts in poker are like muscle memory, the more practice the better the response.  I tend to rely more on mathematics in situations, which can be good but also bad-nittyness.  However, the more I play I see patterns in plays that opponents make that are easily identified. In these situations I may not have a good hand but I know I can get them to fold, etc……  Your instincts may not always be right but you can improve them. Awareness and practice-the two most important things.

as alluded to here…instinct is not random.  It's trained.  Check out these books about the topics.  Great reads.

Thanks for the responses and book suggestions, I always enjoy a new read.  I was just a little upset at myself for not taking a couple of seconds to step back, take my time, and listen to myself.  That is a weakness of mine for sure, taking my time that is, and I believe this experience is going to be a great lesson/learning tool to grow on.  As long as I learn from the experience I am ok with how things went down.  Again thanks for the book suggestions.

Had an interesting hand in the AP $10k i won the other night.  Was actually chatting with RFB at the time and I was like “man my instincs tell me to call here”.

I had AThh for top 2 pair but there were 4 diamonds on the board and he bet the river.

I literally used my entire time bank and then was having an internal struggle between between calling (which my gut was telling me to do) and folding.  I finally made the call and he was bluffing and I shipped a huge pot.  You are not always right, but if you tracked it, I'd bet your “instinctual move” is right more than it is wrong.

It was like my brain had processed things I had seen before, what this player had done earlier and what he was doing now and even though I could not conceptualize it, my brain just knew he was bluffing.
