Hero (UTG+2): BB = 124.8, t9985
Olsen83 (MP1): BB = 24.8, t1985
jerker4p (MP2): BB = 29.6, t2370
Merfinis (CO): BB = 41.8, t3341
hamahama29 (BTN): BB = 63.1, t5050
pingvin608 (SB): BB = 53.7, t4294

K.Krivic (UTG+1): BB = 106.7, t8535
Pre Flop: (t210) Hero is UTG+2 with Q Q
x2 folds, Hero raises to t200, 1 fold, jerker4p calls t200, 1 fold, hamahama29 raises to t560, pingvin608 calls t520, 1 fold,
hamahama29 has only been at the table for 8 hands so no reads. pingvin608 is playing 20/7/4 over just 55 hands and I have no other reads.
Hero calls t360, jerker4p calls t360
Flop: (t2410) 8 A 4 (4 players)
pingvin608 bets t3724 all in, Hero folds, jerker4p folds, hamahama29 folds
My question is really just about pre-flop. I elect to just call for the lower variance option. I have a decent stack and the field remains poor (apart from Merfinis who is on my table). I did 'have a plan' which was to bet/call any non A or K flop.
Thoughts?

I don't see why your proposed line is low variance. Winning the pot immediately with a 4-bet, which will happen a reasonable amount of the time, is a pretty low-variance thing to do. If you get it in on non-A/K flops, then you don't avoid stacking off to AA/KK anyway. Getting in against AK is not the worst thing in the world, you are actually a favorite despite the fact that we call it a “coin flip”. And there's a lot of value in denying a flop to AQ/JTs/88.
The button's range ought to be wide enough that he'll either fold a lot to your 4-bet, in which case you can afford to be a bit behind if the money goes in pre, or you'll be ahead if the money goes in pre. Just make it like 1111 or something and call it off if necessary.
Edit: I forgot about the cold caller. That makes this a really clear 4-bet, though I'd size a bit bigger to avoid giving the button really appealing odds. Maybe like 1357.
