(I left results in since I think my description implies I won. I left out V’s hand though since I didn’t know it at that point anyway.)

V just got to the table a few hands before and opened the last hand for $1000 as well. With almost no sample he could have just had monsters both times, but seemed fishy.

I made an odd tiny re-raise on the turn thinking that it would buy me a lot of information cheaply. I expected to get re-popped if he had a K (discounting weak Kx due to pre-flop action) or better. The intention was to show interest in adding chips to get him to bet. I just wonder if I bet so little that I might have risked inducing a bluff from a more aggressive player and bet my way out of the pot. Too tricky here?

Considering my thinking/results on the turn I’m not sure what I was thinking on the river. I feel like I missed a lot of value there. I think I could have bet something like $5475 to get calls from Tx or JJ, and maybe some middle pairs, without looking like I’m begging for a call.

Thoughts on my entire line, value points, or anything else, most welcome.

‘Buying information’ should never really be a part of your thinking when evaluating a potential bet. You should be thinking about your opponent’s range, which is a theoretical concept about which you can never truly gain information – you can only gain information about your opponent’s hand, which is a results-oriented, short-term approach that can be harmful to your game. Forget about gaining information about your opponent’s current hand – it’ll lead you down the wrong path.

I think your line preflop and on the flop is more or less fine. On the turn, I strongly dislike your play. Villain is unlikely to lead into two players with worse than Kx, and you have blockers to some of villain’s most frequent draws. You also have a third player in the hand, left to act behind. I’d go so far as to say your turn raise only ever gets called by better hands, and gets all worse hands to fold – this is basically what always happens when you ‘bet for information’.

I also disagree that villain would re-raise you with Kx or better, since it’s a pretty good spot for them to call and then either check-call or check-raise the river (since your raising range should be reasonably polarized to strong hands or bluffs…even though it’s not, because you actually raised a middle-strength hand, which is what caused you problems).

I agree with checking the river, because I think you virtually never get called by worse when you bet here. In fact, you probably stand a better chance of getting KJ to fold the river than getting JJ to call.

I took everything you said to heart except this one line. I think it is extremely likely that V would lead in with second pair after the flop is checked around. If it checked to me I would have bet too.

I think I should have called the turn and re-evaluated on the river; probably calling another bet. I think I might have gotten more value out of this line too as my odd turn raise would have shut down any Tx or bluffs.

If he checked the river I could have once again probably gotten more value with a small 35-50% bet.

Agree / disagree?
