Adaptive raise sizing based on effective stacks is more or less the best way to go, in my opinion. At deeper stacks you lose a lot of value by going too small, while at shorter stacks going smaller creates additional maneuverability. Operating on a sliding scale of sizings from 3.5bb or 4bb at 200bb+, down to minraising at 30bb or fewer seems to be hard to argue against.
If you’re still using a 4x raise as standard at all stack sizes, you’re significantly behind the times. You probably lose value regularly and find it extremely hard to get action on your big hands, while risking huge amounts just for the ability to occasionally take down pots preflop. If players in your games are doing that, that’s great for you, so don’t discourage it! Just make sure you know how to respond. In general, fold more.
