I played in a live tourney the other day that plays something like an online turbo, or super turbo. You start with 80 bb's (4k in chips), and blinds
double every 20 min. I was on a shortstack early at the 2nd level (50-100), and in the bb with 900 after posting. Middle position opened to 300,
there were 4 callers. The pot was 1650 when the sb folded to me, and I had Q9o. I was getting better than 8-1 on a call, but folded because of
how dominated I thought the hand was, and the fact that my FE would be decreased after calling another 200 chips. Of course the flop came
K-J-10, but whatever. Was this fold a mistake? Thanks for your thoughts.
I think in these situations pot odds is really the wrong perspective on the situation. I would tend to focus more on what I think the OR was opening with and how my hand would stack up with it. He is a MP raiser Live so it is a little more complex as there is a lot more variety in what they open, but he went full 3x so you can make some assumptions about what he is opening here (Ax, Broadways, suited connectors, that sort of stuff tends to appear a lot in live opens). Your Q9o kind of falls somewhere in the middle there so that it is a bit ambiguous about what to do. Lets take a look at anything else we may or may not know, the biggest thing that strikes to me is that you are going to be basically 3x'ing him on your 3bet so you do have a little bit of FE there. Long story short on this one, it comes down for me on whether or not the villian is going to fold to a full 3x 3bet shove? If the answer is yes (or we believe it to be yes) then in go my chips, if no then I think I wait for a hand that I can use card removal on or an opportunity for a LP open/shove with your 10bb stack.
As a quick side question, where you playing a lot of pots or did you lose one (or two) big ones? Reason I ask is your stack is really crippled for level 2 in a turbo, if you were really active you may want to think about preserving your stack a little for later push/fold situations. If you just got dinged up in some pots that didn't fall your way, that always sucks.
Yeah, Thanks for your response. He was early/middle, maybe 3rd to act at a 10 handed table. I may have made him fold, but I feel either him,
or one or more of the four original callers was calling me if I pushed. I guess if I only got one caller, that wouldn't be too bad considering all the
dead money in the pot. I dunno. I made what I feel were some substandard plays to arrive at my shortstack. On the first hand of the tourney
( again 80 bb's ) UTG limped, I was UTG+1 with AQ. I decided to limp as well. There were
something like 6 limps after, and the button made it 350 to go. I was the only original limper to call the raise and the flop came down
AJ6. He C-bet around 1/2 pot, and I called. Turn was a 10, again he bet around 1/2 pot, and I folded. He did show AK, so I felt I
made a good fold, but don't think I played the hand very well. On another hand I made a horrible ( what I thought was) value bet on the river in
position, that I won't burden you with here. Otherwise, I think I played fairly standard, but I have much to learn, so I'm not entirely sure.

Don't beat yourself up, we are all here to learn for sure. The community is what makes us better so the more you ask the better you get. Your AQo hand is interesting to me. You may want to try a little different tactic on these wet flops and potentially try to steal some of these pots with these advantagous turn cards. In your example above think about raising there. There is no reason he has to have the Flush or a FD as he is going to be c-betting his entire range there. You call can be either a TP hand or a FD. When the diamond hits there, try to raise. The story you are telling is pretty believeable as a Flush that was made on the turn and you can steal pots like this. Something to think about a little.

Yeah, like a lot of average/ below average players, I'm too paranoid that he's got the flush (or whatever other hand crushes me). Bad habit of mine to assume my opponents have better hands than they do. That would have been a really nice play to push there, and he probably folds almost always. Good advice. Thx
yeah i fold Q9o in the 1st hand above
3x and 4 callers means you probably have someone dominating both of your cards
save the small amount of chips we have to open shove this next orbit from LP and try double up
and on the AQ<AK hand -you can see why les is a moderator on the site.
One thing he always thinks about is scare cards, for the villain. He's so right, if we changed spots and had AK there, and 2 barreled, and got check raised, its going to be very hard for us to continue b/c our opponent is repping flush/straight/2 pairs.
I'm slowly getting used to changing my frame of mind with some turn cards from;
“shit thats a scare card for me, he must have it, i give up”
to;
“Man thats a scare card for him and a beautiful one for me to represent!”
seems like this controlled aggression wins pots in the long run
