I was just curious about the concept of pot control.  I notice in a lot of the vids it is stated “check behind for pot control.”  I understand you dont want to play a pot that is bigger than your hand but once I started to think about it i'm not sure I hav the full grasp of the concept.  I was wondering when you want to check behind for pot control.  Is it just to induce a bluff and/or to make sure the pot doesn't get too big for your top pair marginal kicker hand?

sometimes you have a hand that has significant value, but can't stand a raise from your opponent – i.e something like KT on a K high dry board or something – in this case, if you bet, you can get check raised by both set type hands and air hands as well, and its really hard to play. but if you check behind, it means that the pot is smaller so you can now call any turn and re-evaluate to see whether villain has a monster, or whether this is air. so you minimise your risk against the strong hands, and pick up value against bluffs.

i hope that makes sense, please tell me if i am wrong.

Good post Benny. Also, sometimes you feel you have the best hand but there is a chance your beat or the board can be full of draws and you know your opponent will call a bet; this could also be a reason for pot control. You don't need to 3 barrel every hand you think is good. Why potentially go from 50bb's to 30bb's with a mediocre hand. If you dont have a monster but have decent showdown value, sometimes it is better to try and get to showdown cheap.

Just a footnote, although it should be pretty obvious, pot control doesnt really work that well oop. This is pretty important, because it is such a significant concept.

i disagree
continuing my earlier example of KT on a K high dry board,
pot controlling oop just means you check-call instead of leading out, because it means you can't get raised. works just as well or even better imo because villains are much more inclined to take a stab at the pot with their air hands if they are in position, which means our medium strength bluff catcher type hand is better.
the downside of course, is if you are continually check-calling, you are playing the guessing game as to whether villain is barelling or value towning you, so the disadvantages of playing OOP are still there, and you cant control the bet sizing as much,  but you can still pot control by taking the raise out of the villain's playbook.
