Hi guys,
This is a little bit of a general question but I tried to focus on one specific aspect of what I'm trying to work on.
I understand that in the early game without antes one can argue for both open raising or open folding pairs like 22-44 in UTG or UTG+1, but that it's commonly considered good to fold. Of course if it's early, pre antes but we are low, (below 15BB) we may want to open shove these hands.
Once antes kick in and I understand pots are more worth fighting for. Here I think open raising low pairs UTG becomes better, but that not every situation warrants it. I get the feeling that there is a short to moderate stack size range at which it's better to still open fold tiny pairs.
If this is true I'm trying to figure out what the stack size range tends to be. I believe it begins near 18BB and goes until around 40BB. I choose 18BB because this and above this range is the reshove size, and when people knows this it's a stack at which it feels tough to call reshoves over our 2BB open. Then I am not sure why I choose 40BB, but I feel that somewhere aorund there it becomes easy enough to afford playing for direct and implied odds again, and sometimes we can fold to big reraises.
Is this thinking pretty decent? I could see the answer being “No, don't open tiny pocket pairs UTG unless you have to, even post antes.” I could also see the answer being “post antes you should start opening tiny pocket pairs UTG in almost all situations, unless there are very specific reasons, like hyper aggro tables or reshove stacks across the board.”

It really does depend on the table your on and your stacksize. With a 15-35bb stack size folding small pairs from EP is fine however you could open/fold these hands if your on a tight table. If your stacksize is over 40bb you can open up with pairs and suited connectors from EP however on a table with a lot of loose aggro players you can may decide to fold.
positon is key , you can open up these hands with more regularity (espically in LP) even if your at 20-30bb, depending on the tendencies of the blinds. If you have tighter players on the blinds you can widen up your range if they are looser you may decide to tighten up.

I've done quite a bit of HM2 analysis of these kinds of spots. The threshold for me at which they become profitable tends to be around 28bb and above. At tighter tables they may be profitable at shorter stacks, and at looser ones they'll be unprofitable up to even 35bb and beyond sometimes.
Of course it depends how good you are postflop in general, so your mileage may vary. Those who are better than me postflop might be able to get away with opening them at shorter stack sizes, and those who struggle postflop should be more inclined to fold them.
