Poker, an evolving game.....

The advent of all the poker training literature, sites (such as the excellent TPE) and coaching sessions, poker concepts are changing and evolving far quicker than before.

History has shown that the most profitable approach to any investing / gambling is to go against the masses. The more people follow a particular concept, the less effective such a concept becomes.

With regard to poker, I'm just opening a discussion on how the tried and tested techniques and concepts are evolving and what we should do to profitably counteract these changes?

In all honesty the above really only has significance at the mid / high levels where a more demanding metagame approach exists. I think the ABC approach still has it's place in the micro-levels I languish in!!

So to generate some good debate and possibly some newer concepts from our more esteemed members I'll kick off with a few obvious ones:

1) Continuation betting

Where this was so successful a few years ago, now too much auto pilot cont betting is a serious leak with some players.

2) 3 and 4 betting

Increased frequency in the above has led to a tightening of these ranges.

3) UTG raising

Ranges for this practice have become wider meaning it doesn't hold the perceived strength it once did.

Limping AA/KK.  I've seen an absolute explosion of this at the micros over the past couple of weeks.  Not a strategy I personally use, but maybe this is a new trend.

At the micro levels, I've noticed more players open limping regardless of their hands. There's also the trend toward check-raising.

But the main two trends I've seen in micro tourneys are: 1) calling with any two suited cards if one card is a face card and 2) calling big raises or 3 or 4-bet raises with A6o-A9o, even if the bet jeopardizes the player's stack. I lost in consecutive days AA vs. A8o and KK vs. A6o when the villains caught 4-card straights to the 8 and 6. I've seen play made countless times recently.

Hell, there were a bunch of OPR-certified negative forever ROI donks who qualified through satellites in the final 4-5 tables of the Sunday Millions doing this —– and catching aces. A few railbirds even openly chatted about the players and the lack of quality of play leading up to the final table.

But are there new trends at the higher stakes????

c betting definitely has its place still and is a effective tool at all levels. c betting for me allows me to maintain my aggression and keep the pressure on my opponents while ultimately setting up my big hands to get paid off. Picking your spots with timely 3 and 4 bets is a great way to pickup chips but these plays are read dependant and table dynamics come into play more so having a greater feel and understanding for the 2 gives you a leg up on the lesser player who has promoted themselves to a bigger game without justification this is the player these plays will remain profitable against because in the online world this type of player continues to come and its up to you to find out what buyin level thats the most exploitable. This limping utg with AA or KK is like the new online trap im starting to see this play far more often then i used to and i would proceed with caution under these circumstances as it is a very popular open in this spot with these hands and im still evaluating the play and trying to figure out how im going to approach utg limpers.

People like to float cbets or call them wider.  There are a lot of spots nowadays where when someone flatcalls a flop, you can narrow their range down to hands that just can't stand 3 barrel or 2 barrel most of the time and just barrel off with whatever you have.  Obviously doesn't work as well at the low limits unless you ahve a read the player isn't a station, but it can be a very effective tool in the mid-high stakes games.  Also, 3betting light in uncommon spots, like to poeple who are raising pretty wide in EP and MP is a great tool, as well as doing it enough to create people 4betting you light and 3betting you light, so you can have aggressive dynamic to pick up chips when you 4bet light in good spots, and create more action for your monster hands.
