Is everything I thought about playing Pocket Aces preflop wrong????  Was playing a daily at the Aria in Vegas, I bubbled and then damn it bubbled it again the next day……but enough whining and on to my question.  One day, I watched players table AA at the end of the hand where they limped pre-flop, this happened 7 times.  All these times, it went to the flop 4 or 5 handed and the AA limper came from multiple different positions. Each time the player with Aces won, but somebody tell me that limping Aces isn’t now the norm?  Fun fact, the only pocket aces that I saw lose was from a pre-flop raiser.  So what gives?

Hey habeeb,

No man, I think limping aces is not the norm, although it is a trend which seems to be popular right now. I dont like it, because obviously the greater number of players you tempt in to the hand, the worse your equity with AA gets.

My guess is that the idea is to limp in, hope someone raises the limp, then you can 3bet. This always looks super strong to everyone, in fact always looks like aces, so for this reason I dont like the play because it is not likely to be the most +ev way to play aces…unless of course you are a GTO demon, who limp/3bets AA 2/3rds of the time and limp/3bets JTs 1/3rd of the time or some such ratio.

Usually the only time I am likely to limp AA is bvb as the SB, as part of a (hopefully) balanced SB open limp range.

AA vs 50% range has 84.5% equity in heads up pot.

In 3 way pot AA vs same range has 72.6%

In 4 way it is already 63.7%

So with each additional limper AA loose almost 10% of equity and each additional limper “invites” other to limp as well. And people respect more bets in multiway pots, so many time you will bet flop and collect only whatever people limp.

And I know, it sucks to bet AA and see everybody folds… but in long run AA are more profitable to be played fast.

You guys are only looking at the downside of AA. Of course you aren’t hoping to end up playing a limped, multi-way pot. You have to weigh the risk of that versus the benefits of getting in a limp-re-raise.
