Playing way above my normal buy-in

Hi guys, thanks for your excellent input, I love the site.

I've won a seat worth UK £200+£20 (aprox. US $320+$32) in a monthly televised Sky Poker online event via a loyalty freeroll. Usually I only play in tournaments with micro buy-ins between £2 and £5 (US $3 to $8) and small fields, say 30 to 150 runners. My preference is for bounty events and fast structured tournaments. Occasionally I play in mid stakes tourneys when I win a seat via a satellite. I'm purely a recreational player, but I play daily and consistantly earn a decent ROI. The event I've won a seat into is a 6-max deep-stack tournament with 12 minutes levels and no antes. The field is capped at 60 runners, there'll probably be between 50 and 60 entrants and 8 spots paid, just a min cash would be my second biggest ever online score. Occasionally in the past I've sat at online tables with some of the full time pros who'll be in this event, I'm totally at ease in their company and hold no fear playing them.

How should I approach this tournament? I'm torn between two choices;

1. I should just treat this as freeroll and play my normal game. I've got nothing to lose so I needn't worry about taking the usual calculated risks, I'll enjoy it and play for the win.

2. Take a more careful nittier approach, place more value than usual on my tournament life, avoid flips if at all possible and try to survive for a min cash.

Any advice/opinions gratefully received.

I'd go with #1. You have no money invested, so there's really no downside, and it will also not only give you the best shot at cashing, but also the best shot at a big score.

go for the big score…this is an excellent chance to elevate your bankroll in a way that would be difficult otherwise.  Good luck!

freeroll!!!!!

take it as a chance for some really decent money.

my ABI online is about $10, and recently i won a satellite to the Aussie Millions Event 1, which is a $1100 tourney.

when i played that tourney, there were numerous spots where i felt like i was ahead, but because it was clearly the biggest tourney i have ever played, i just found myself not being able to pull the trigger, or i would set up some multi street plays but chicken out halfway though, and now i am kicking myself for it.

so my advice would be to try and treat it like any other tourney. easier said than done but you will play a lot better if you can.

hope that helps.

yeah definitely play your normal game and go for the win.  No one should play tournaments to get 37th place.

   Being someone who play the same stakes that you do, I agree with everyone else go with #1.

Thanks guy, I agree, it's gotta be #1. This tournament takes place on Thursday evening, for those in the UK it's got live TV coverage on Sky Sports and Sky Poker, key hands will be replayed with a slight delay. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks for your support guys, I gave it my best shot but it wasn't to be this time.

Most of the first hour went well despite having Team Sky Poker pro James Williams sat to my immediate left, after 45 mins I was cl at my table and near the top of the leaderboard. Just before the hour break I lost over half my stack when my AA was outdrawn by A9o which rivered a gutshot. Tried to recover in the second hour but the cards weren't going my way, I eventually busted out when I got it all-in pre against the pro blind vs blind 18BB deep, my ATs was no good against his AK. I'm happy with the way I played, enjoyed the experience and keen to play in more tournaments like this in future. In the mean time I'll be working hard to improve my game using the excellent content here on TPE.
