another hand from the “winning poker tournaments one hand at a time vol1” book

hand 23

100$ freezeout blinds 100-200

hero utg (3412) raise 500 QQ

mp (6960) reraise 2000

cutoff (7670) reraise ALL IN

hero utg FOLD

reads: cutoff is a very smart aggro player

i definetly can understand this fold cause theres a high possibility we're up against QQ+, AK

BUT if we fold it leaves us with under 15bb and we're in the blinds next. wouldnt it be worth to gamble???

Well personally I think 15BB is way more playable in a live setting than online, so I would still be able to fold at that point if I felt it was the correct decision. (Assuming this is live, wasn't specified)

I guess this comes down to whether by “very smart” aggro player, you mean he's not just doing this with peanuts in his hand and recognizes that at least one of us is calling.  You're definitely not doing the happy dance if called either way as it's a flip at best.

I dunno, I probably call can't fold QQ in that spot personally.

Couldnt fold that at the stakes I play at, but can see why pearljammer would…

we're not exactly flipping against that range – 41% of the time we are crushed, 55% we are flipping

Quite a gamble that would be….

its probably one of those spots where CO knows he has very little fold equity, and so has to have a very strong hand in order to get it in 3 ways here. having said that, im definitely not good enough to fold here.

Pearljammer seems to have a bit of a reputation for making these kinds of folds with this sort of stack.  Not sure I could do it here, but it seems to have served him well.

@das fix: online hand

@sammy: i wouldnt make much of a difference at that hand which stake its played

pearljammer writes he knows the cutoffguy and that he wouldnt normally risk his solid stack that early, so that indicates he really has a premium, with this info i think its possible to fold, but if im not 100% sure that he just does this with QQ+ it would be impossible to me to fold with the given stacksize

mp raise looks very strong against a short-stacked player like PJ that is known as tight.

CO realizes that the player's MP raise is strong and that he is unwilling to fold, so he has to have a hand that beats PJ's opening range with that stack and the MP 3-bet.  He's just not ahead that often.

Could I make this fold every day?  No, but I see the reasoning behind finding one.  during SCOOP last year I think I folded QQ pre-flop four different times.  It certainly happens… but it's only on really rare situations that are more clear than PJ's fold.

nice analysis and reasoning wein – esp the fact that this is not something we should be doing everyday and that there are certain situations where it would be very clear to do so

lesson here is that i/we cant take hands for face value, and that to run deep in SCOOP events we need to be super nittylaugh hehe

I think Wein puts it best here.  I wouldn't make a habit out of folding QQ pre-flop but there are def times where it is acceptable.

For instance in the WSOP $1k this year a hand came down at a table I just moved to where blinds were 200/400 50.  MP1 makes it 900, MP2 shoves for around 6,300 and next to act shoves for 18,250.  I'm on the button and jokingly tell kid on my left wonder what I have to look at here as I look down at QQ.  I had around 36k to start the hand and tanked for quite a while and ended up folding QQ here.  MP1 ended up folding and MP2 had AK and next to act had the other QQ.

Point being I think there are situations where you can find a fold with QQ pre but wouldn't be doing it very often.
