Decided to see a flop and see if I could smash it, definitely folding pre would of been the better choice but I had position so I decided to play the hand. The bet on the flop seemed too big and shouted suspicion to me. Making top pair on the turn I figured I was good so i tried to trap him and get him to put all his chips in the middle on the river. He got all his chips in but I was completely wrong. yell
I had just moved to the table so my information on the villain wasn't sufficient to make any legitimate reads. Is this just a horrible play? Would love to hear some opinions.

I can't really give advice because you need to fold pre to a 4x in what will more than likely be a heads up pot.  It's an extremely marginal spot at best and I'd rather wait for spots to exploit instead of spots to guess.

Folding pre to the 4 times BB open.  This type of raise screams to me either a premium or sometimes small to mid pairs.  Also being new to the table you have no reads.  Does villian normally open this big or usually 3x?  Since we dont know and still rather early in the tourney I dont make this play.

I agree that you should fold pre flop, but on the other side I don't hate your play… This 15k super stack is very soft tourney with lots of bad players, and KQ will be good there descent percentage of time, but I would need a read and confirmation of that read in order to go broke with KQ there… Without read on player I would fold pre flop….

agree that this tourny is indeed soft, but 4x raise pre this early even in pos is a fold. this type of raise from weaker players scream AA, KK or some small pr. after he continues to barrel I'm leaning more toward the higher pairs. we would have to have a few callers in the pot by the time it get to us to justify a flat in this pos.

Pre: Fold. His range should be snug here – something like 99-JJ, AK, AQ. A 4X UTG *usually* contains one of these.

Flop: Fold. Floating here is not a good option. The 60% pot c-bet may have seemed big to you but in realty it's a good size to start building the pot to get an all-in situation since you guys started the hand deep.

Turn: Survey Says! Fold. Once you hit your pair and he bets the pot you really need to time bank here and ask yourself what he'd do that with. He bets 60% pot on a non-descript board and then bets close to pot when a broadway card comes that also brings some draws into the mix.

If he had TT, JJ, or AK I don't see him taking this action. So of the kind of tight range we assigned to him we're looking at hands like 99, AQ, and possibly KK and AA which I didn't mention earlier.

Realistically these are the only two situations where anything positive happens for you:

1. He has KQ and you chop.

2. He is bluffing with AK and you win.

#2 is so rare that I'd assign that about a 5% chance of being the case here.

So, pre-flop folding aside I think this hand serves as a great example of how to evaluate turn cards and bet sizes and put your hand into very clear perspective.

^^^

I would add its UTG…and don't see why you would float on the flop…If you think the flop bet is fishy and he has complete poop, raise him. If not get out. KQ looks flashy but if you look closely its an easy way to get herpes.
