What up TPE Nation! I am posting this topic here, because IMO it is MTT Strategy. In regards to using my HUD recently, I have done something I though I could never do….I turned it off!!! In the past I would develop the shakes if there was something wrong with my Tracker software. However, after listening to BigDog his latest 2+2 pokercast and HurricaneJeff in his last HH Review talk about not using a HUD due to game flow, table dynamics, etc., I figured I would give it a shot.
It may be just coincidence, but since that time (in the last week) I have had success at the tables. Don't get me wrong, I am not winning every race or flip, I still make mistakes, but it has helped me open my game up to moves where I may not of done when I am so dependent on a HUD. It has made me think more, and has helped me make decisions during the tourney becasue of game play, and not someones vpip, fold to c bet %, 3 bet %, etc.
I would recomend that people used to playing with a HUD, to give it a try. It is rather liberating and may make you grow as a player. If you don't like it after a certain period of time, just turn the HUD back on. Best of luck at the tables!

i personally like a pretty minimalist hud. i used to just have bb, vpip, pfr, 3bet and number of hands, and that was it. just for the reasons you mentioned. since the ben hales series i have experimented by putting more stats on the hud, but i still dont use them much.
i personally think turning the hud off completely is a bad idea – it just helps with player identification so much easier. so i think the issue is sometimes people read too much into the stats. i.e they see someone with a 15% 3bet and just think they are a monkey when its just sample size and they punt.

Yeah, I definitely hear ya…My stats that I use are minimal as well. I wanted to try something new, and can see mysefl turning the HUD back on at some point, but I wanted to experment with it off. The one thing, I will say is that by having it off, it has made myself pay more attention to the tables, and I didn't feel handcuffed in making certain plays due to what i see on the villain's stats.

I agree…… because i like and am involved in a lot of live play i think slowing down to think and realize gameflow and table dynamics is almost becoming a lost art in Online play….
i like the HUD for smallish reasons: player identification, and overall aggression and maybe fold to c bet… but i basically ONLY use these when i am in a tough spot…
The other reason, which is the MOST VALUABLE IN MY OPINION, is for HAND HISTORY REVIEWS…
i can review my session afterward and assess my hands [most significantly big pots i lost and analyze every street to figure out why
I haven't used a hud in 2 1/2 years. If you are mass tabling SNGs a hud is a necessity. If you are 6-10 tabling mtts and focused you definitely shouldn't depend on one but I am sure just for player recognition, aggression and a few other factors like you mentioned it could prove beneficial in some cases.

huds help but only if you accept that they are limited in what they can tell you, but in deciding if we want to open super wide or not: like IP, ante stage, ect its so helpful. Plus the fact that if your playing a ton of tables knowing exactly what your BB's is helps with open shove/fold spots making sure your getting them pretty close to correct

Great disscussion. I use a hud a lot but like Benny keep it simple. But I only start using a HUD seriously last year, and it did get me in a few tough spots / missreads / missplays. But I have adjusted to it now and dont over value it. I like to understand gameflow and table dynamics, and having played for quite a few years without any 'aids' has helped with that. So I dont lose touch with actually read the table or picking up on when a player is changing gears etc I do like to play sessions with the HUD off (but capturing the hands), when I do this I reduce the number of tables (and increase the number of recorded notes). If your HUD corrupts or crashes are you going to stop playing? Drive without the seat belt on occasionally so its not uncomfortable for you when you're forced to.
