I play in a weekly league where points are awarded and the top two point winners get a seat in a WSOP event.  I am currently in 1st place in the league with 13 weeks remaining and third place 200 points behind me.  Ran into a situation the other night that seemed like an easy call at first, but not sure if there are ICM consideration I am not thinking about.

Hero is 6th in chips and point payouts are as follows:

1st – 70, 2nd – 50, 3rd – 30, 4th – 20. 5th – 15, 6th – 10, 7th – 5

Blinds 1500-3000

Ante 300

7 handed

Hero (BB) 16,000 with 74o

V1 (Hijack) 5000

V2 (Button) 40,000

Preflop – V1 goes all in and V2 calls

Pot = 15,100

First instinct was that although my hand is normally not playable, it is only another 2000 to call, so I am getting 7.5 to 1, but is it better to just fold and hopefully V1 gets knocked out, or call and hope to smash the flop and double up.

It depends on V2. Some players would check it down to eliminate the all-in player, but because you’re pretty short, too, he may bet you off your hand on any flop. If the flop comes A7x or A4x, can you call if he shoves?

Like Joel says, it is a profitable call only if it is going to be checked down, which is usually the case in small live tournaments, since there is no side pot as well. Assuming you called, you can only proceed to the turn if you catch 2 pair or trips or straight, in which case I am assuming you will go for a bet on either flop or turn to indicate to V2 that you got what it takes to eliminate V1.

Letting other players know when you have a strong hand is not generally considered sound poker strategy surprised

Andrew, again, this is what I think smile

Usually when you bet in the final table in a multi-way pot when someone is all in, the others assume you have the goods to knock the all-in player, as you’re kind of betting into an empty side pot. You can’t bet with complete air thinking even though flop misses your range, it doesn’t hit villain’s range. You need to have a sizable equity in the pot to bet there.

My idea to bet was only if V2 checks back the flop. If V2 has an over-pair, he will most likely take a stab at the board and if I have trips or straight there, I can check-call or if I have 2-pair, I can check-raise, protecting my hand and may be V2 will slow down with his over pair in the future streets.

Sure, I’m not saying you shouldn’t bet a hand if you make one, but you should do whatever you can to get value from it, your goal shouldn’t be to let Villain know you made a hand.
