New member and first time post here:)  I am trying to learn how to play MMTs coming from a cash game. Please look at the hand below and tell me your thoughts on my shove. My read on the limper/Villain who had me 2 to 1 on chips was that in LP he liked to open limp weak hands. I have been open shoving most hands that  I have played as of late due to my stack to blind size. I got called once by AK vs my QQ so I havent shown trash.  Sorry if I should have put this in some hand converter.  This is a 180 KO SnG on FT.

Thanks for the info………I have to get use to shoving wider than I do and picking up more chips when I can so I dont become so short stacked. As played he called with A7o and made a straight….gg. I went out somewhere between 20th-30th, not a bad start for domeone who hasnt played many tournaments.

So i’d like us to look at this hand and do a more rigorous analysis than simply posting what I feel is the right play.  Let’s apply some math.  Doing this is really important as you transition to MTTs for success because the math at these stack levels can be calculated relatively easily and provides solid guidance on strategy.

Hagbard covers a lot of this in his shallow stack video so let’s get some practice.

Let’s start by determining ranges.  Jdog, what do you think his limping range is and what do you think his range for calling a shove are?

His limp range I think is wide. If I would poker stove it I would say about 46%. I think he would limp  any weak Ax, K5+ through K9o, maybe some trash unsuited queens, any small PP say 22-44, some one gap unsuited stuff like 97o.

His range for calling the shove I would expect since it would be for half of his chips  55+, ATo +, and KJs+, KQo+.

ok so then if his pf limp range is 46%, and his calling range according to your estimate is 11% which means you get called ~24% of hte time.

76% of the time you take the pot down (1500) without contest

24% of the time you are called and you have ~37% equity.  The EV of this specific scenario is ~ -386.

(.76*1500) + (.24*-386) = 754

Looks like a call to me.

glgl…trust me you do a ton of these and your instinct will become much better.  two summers ago, i created a spreadsheet where i could plug these numbers in quickly and for several months I would do these calcs on the fly.  It really helped me understand what to do much better.

Yes I need to understand the math aspect better no doubt. Im 10th out of 14 left in the 90man…only 9 get paid. I want to make a final table for once.

Thanks …. I was one of those guys in your video. One of the smaller stacks just trying to make it in the money. I had two other stacks that were going to be forced to do something before me and I didnt want to bubble. It really hurt my chances of taking it down without hitting some monster hands fast. I just need to get myself in a position near the bubble to be one of the players abusing the smaller stacks rather than being the abused.
