I won’t go into detail about the 3bet/4bet/5bet-wars etc because I think they are not the real issue. I think you need to learn more about variance in poker.
If, for example, you mainly play the huge tournaments on stars with 3000 to 30000 entrants, even if you make the correct decision (based on the information you have of course) every time with all your hands, there is a chance that you never make it to a final table after playing 200+ tournaments. Maybe this number is even higher like 400+. I don’t have the exact numbers, I just know that one of the most important things as soon as you have the fundamentals of good pokerplay is to understand a) good bankroll management and directly linked to that b) variance in MTTs.
Check out this fantastic blog on the issue: …..tt_pros_2/
Trust me, I joined TPE about 2 years ago and could feel the great improvements in my game after a relativly short period of time. Then I suffered from massive downswings, which again affected my game, because I began to doubt many of the decisions I made. I read a lot about variance, adjusted the avarage buy-in of my tournaments and tried to work hard on my game. I also worked hard on my mental game/tilt issues, preparation before playing etc. After a few months I had good results again. Then I suffered from losing-months again. Well, in the end I made the decision to stop playing on stars almost completely, because of the huge player fields and my mental-game problems I had when finishing a month playing over 1000 tournaments with -$1000 in my bankroll.
Now I play on sites with 100 to a max of 2000 players and am doing great. This is what did it for me.
Maybe I’ll return to stars, when I got a big enough bankroll to play larger stakes (which often offer tournaments with fewer players, drastically reducing variance).
Also, watching live-sweats and seeing even the best pros getting sucked out of their tournaments sooner or later may help you with this kind of problem. All the TPE content will give you the tools to become a great player, I am totally sure about that, so just be patient and work on all the different aspects of the game. Obviously you have some mental-game work to do, as you say you hate losing control etc. but if you study hard and gain a lot of experience just by playing, you have a good chance of overcoming this. I believe it will be crucial to success.
