I was wondering what the Pros views were on registering late to online MTTs. Do you always like to be in the tourney from the very beginning or do you feel there is an advantage to registering at last minute and starting with relatively shorter stack?

Personally I prefer to be in it from the get-go. How about other TPEers?

Care to explain your rationale behind registering so late?

i prefer to be preregistered for as much as possible and play from the beginning.

however, there are a couple instances where i late reg. the first is at the beginning of sessions. i'll usually get a slightly late start and have to late reg the beginning of my schedule.

the second is any stars tourney that starts at the beginning of the hour. because of their clock, the tourneys start a minute or two before the breaks are over on my other tables, so i'll often late reg them. for tourneys like the wednesday quarter million that have lots of satellites running, i'll usually try to late reg 5-10min in to try and avoid being sat with all the regs late regging as well.

yeah i late reg at the start of my sessions, then normally register for everything after that.  It keeps me focused and from watching stuff on T.V.  Then by the time i bust from my first tournament, it's mid stages in the next one so I keep my focus better.

myself i like to pre reg, but sometimes will late reg but no longer then 20 minutes, i feel that there is a disadvantage because you will start with a shorter stack and possibly miss out on some big pots. maybe even a double up.

if you feel you have an edge in mid blind play you should still late reg at the 59 minute mark if you somehow can't get there within the first 58 minutes of late reg though.  Even if registering early is more +ev, you should still reg at the 59 minute mark if that is your only option as it is still +ev, just not as +ev.  Also technically your starting stack will have more value than the people who registered earlier, as there are fewer people in the field for the same effective prizepool and it isn't winner take all, (if you make the prizepool for people who pre reg. the amount of $ that will eventually be in the tournament when the late reg period is over.)  So I don't think anyone can make a case that signing up at the 59 minute mark is -ev for a +ev player.

i dont like doing it for the 1500 chip tourneys, because quite often the average stack is 2-2.5k by the hour mark, so you are quite a bit behind average.

but if its a 3k start stack (or higher obv) then  the average might only be 3.5-4k so you aren't that far behind the field.

I almost always pre-reg tourneys but if situations come up I have zero issues late regging either.  Just feel like there are a lot of chips that can be accumulated in the very early stages and don't like to give up those opportunities unless their are circumstances where I can't reg on time.
