Hi guys just a question on downswings for mtts, I have been mainly a sng grinder all my life playing a few mtts a week so i have had some large downswings multi tabling sngs.
I started grinding mtts in feb and have 3 good winning months alot of which i owe to TPE , I have had 3 whiff sessions and 2 mincash sessions past week my question is how long and how frequent do downswings last and occur…I play fairly small field tournaments on ipoker and ftp buyins ranging from 5r,10r,10fo and 26fos.
Just want to get an idea thanks guys in advance

this year i had a 65 BI downswing and still had a winning month, as well as a separate 50bi downswing, and i dont really consider that to be out of the ordinary. it can get pretty insane and demoralising when you get to 20 left and lose a 3 outer and win like double your buyin and thats it
I started this year with >100 ave bi downswing. But so far having a good year.
You just gotta keep looking at your HH's, think about where you could be making mistakes and spots you can improve on, watching vids and playing. the wins will come.
Also stay positive, it happens to everyone and your not running worse than anyone else in the world.
I went on an absolute tare last month and ended up 300 ABI's. So far this month since May the 1st i dropped 60 ABI's pretty much without any results at all so from one extreme to the other. This will probably be my first losing month since january.
the size and length of your downswing will largely depend on the games you play, your volume and your tilt management. 50 – 100 buy in swings are pretty common. Dont let it get to you is the main thing and use the downswing to strengthen your mental game.

the thing that i found interesting is that, when looking at my results in HEM, my cash percentage actually didn't change that much. in the upswings and downswings it stayed pretty constant at about 20%. +/- 2%. So i was just getting unlucky and min cashing instead of going really deep.
so i think the moral of the story is, if you know you have an edge on the field, then you just have to keep putting yourself in the positions to win tourneys and soon enough you will get there.
I'm currently on a month long downswing.
I'm managing quite a few deepish runs, but again and again I keep getting outdrawn on the crucial big pots after getting it in with the best hand. I'm typing this post moments after busting yet another tourney on Stars, my squeeze-shove from the SB with TT was called by a donk on the button with A5o, he binked his A of course. Earlier this afternoon on the bubble of a freezeout on Sky I called a button shove from an aggro short-stack with my ATs, he flipped over 9To, flopped 78J and dodged the outs to the chop, from there he went on to win the tournament. These are two typical examples of how I've been running lately.
Despite this spell of run bad I'm not losing heart. I feel almost immune to tilt, I know for sure I'm playing as well as ever. If I was busting loads of tournaments because I was getting it in bad, well then I'd have something to worry about. I've won loads of money over the last year, maybe I had a bit more than my fair share of luck during that time and the poker gods are just evening things out a bit.
I'm going to continue playing and studying as usual. My day will come. The events of Black Friday mean that every single player in the US has had much worse luck than me.
If you're sure you're still playing well and the same as when you were winning, just keep on playing and variance will be back on your side. When i grinded the $12 180 turbos had days where I lost up to 65 BI's in a single day. Very frustrating and have to admit that here and there I made a questionable play, but not that I was tilting off 10-20 BI's. Other days i won 10-50 BI's.
So if your game's is still on point you just have to take the hits or maybe quit earlier for the day if you know it's going to be one of those were nothing will go your way. Then again, you could turn things around in the end and make up. (Possibly ignore last sentence :p)

if, for instance you play anything from $5 to $20 tourneys, then maybe dropping out a few of your $20 games and mixing in a few more $5 games could help as well.
