I watch a lot of online pros playing poker and I see that they min raise a lot pre-flop, instead of 2,5bb or even the so normal 3bb.

Whay u guys think??

You basically look for the smallest open size that gets all folds and stick with it. Some people will do an exact min-raise but 2.2x to 2.4x is really common, too.

3x when antes come into play is not necessary.

Everyone used to raise 3x back in the day, then 2.5x was the 'standard', and now its even less. You are just trying to accomplish your goal without risking more chips then necessary. If you raise just over a min raise pre flop, you pretty much get the same information but your c-bet now becomes smaller so the times that your c-bet fails to take down the pot you lose less chips.

+1 to everything, but in addition:

-When you raise with the plan to fold to a 3b, you're risking fewer chips

-Effective stacks are deeper post flop (assuming you get flatted), which gives an advantage to the the better player for the most part.

– some people are idiots and don't realize that the raise is so small, but instead just see that you raised so they fold.

– blinds make bad flats oop and you can own them later.

Metasploit has a great point.  It's easier to control pots and save on chips when  you are putting less money into it.  early I'll start with 3xbb raises but if I am getting folds I'll turn it down and see if I can get them to fold while putting in less chips.  I tend to cbet often too so I'll do the same with those start with half pot and go down until they don't fold anymore.  I see more people min raising when antes start to kick in all for the same reasons I believe.  Who knows perhaps next week adjustments will be made and 5xbb will be the standard pre flop raise 🙂

I usually minraise pre when I'm down to 40 and below BB or so, or when the table is shortstacked to similar sizes.
