I have to admit, I am feeling a bit like I have lost my way.
Since I have joined this site, my results have been much worse than they were before.
It's not TPEs fault, it's not the members fault, but I am still looking for reasons.
Let me give you some background.
I have been playing a straight out of the books Harrington style of poker. I hadn't played for quite a while and when I came back, I realize the game had changed quite a bit. CBets no longer seemed effective, all kinds of things seems to change in a way that seemed to make playing the Harrington style of hold'em less profitable.
Yet, my results were still good. Perhaps luck, perhaps not, but I was doing really well. That is until I joined TPE.
So what happened?
I am thinking that I am somewhere inbetween being a nit and being something else, and I am thinking that is a bad place to be.
I feel like playing the nit style I was playing before was profitable, but had a cap to that profit. I don't think there was much to improve, nothing really to work on, thus no chance of advancement.
That is one of the reasons why I bought new poker books and join TPE. I realized if I wanted to get better I needed to learn a new technique one that would work in the current meta-game where 90% of the field doesn't limp with any two cards and call down top pair with a weak kicker, (like it seemed to be in 2005-06 last time I played before the end of last year.)
But, now I am stuck. Am I going the right direction? If I keep pursuing this line will I end up surpassing the great results I was getting playing like a nit? Should I continiue to swim into this deeper water, or should I turn back while I can still see the shoreline?
I doubt I am alone in these questions. But, this is a very difficult situation for me to be in. It is very hard for me to go from doing well to doing so poor. It takes a toll on me mentally and physically as I am striving so hard to even just get back to the returns I was making as a nit.
So overall I am looking for some guidance here and a sounding board to find out if what I am saying makes any sense at all or am I just delusional.
Is there a light at the end of this tunnel?
If you are truly applying new concepts it can take a while before you execute them properly. You also have to remember that any short term results could just be variance. I will say though that if you are a nit you won't be profitable for long. It's just too hard to accumlate chips late in a tourney playing a nitty style.
But back to executing new concepts. Do you feel like you are making mistakes in how you are now playing, or it's just not working (ie you are losing flips, taking beats, etc)?
I know for myself it usually takes a few mistakes in execution before I effectively apply anything i learn in a video.
I have definitely have had my share of bad beats and missed flips, but I like to say I am making mistakes, because that is something I can change where luck is not.
It is kind of hard for me to know though to be honest. I think I am applying concepts correctly at the time I am playing, but I could be wrong.
Is there an ability for a member to upload a video for critique? I have Camtasia since I use it for the training videos I do on development. Would love to get some feedback about what I am doing or if my thought process is correct.
I seem to be really good at SNGs, but I find them kind of boring.
Sometimes I also feel like I get mixed information and I wonder if my brain will sort it out correctly. Not sure how best to explain this, but basically I would say that I am getting information from multiple sources, and some of it conficts each other. With time I would imagine that basic truths behind either rational would emerge, but this process seems to be very slow with poker.

Absolutely, we have enabled member blogs with the ability to upload videos. Bennymacca and Jshilling are organizing a member video review schedule. Maybe yours can be the first. PM me your email address and I will send you instructions on how to access your member blog/video upload.
I feel the OP's pain on this one. Lately been taken to town severely. Some of the cause is due to my own mistakes and getting too cocky, but the beats have been hideous as well. I'm trying to convince myself its mostly variance, but its still frustrating. I've viewed several videos on this site as well as read several articles, and trying to apply the concepts in my game, but its been a difficult March so far.
Would also like to record a session or two for review by the pros/members here and the blog/video sounds like a great idea. Use to have CamStudio, but that was two computers ago, I'll try to get it again and try another recording.
I know this next question is impossible to answer, but how long will this down variance last??

It's quite normal to struggle with new concepts and where/when to apply them. I think things will get better with volume and the review (is a great idea)
This seems to be somewhat never ending in poker, especially in MTT's as the landscape changes so quickly. Sounds like you are doing a large overhaul of your game though, things will def get better with volume…
Good luck!
I think one thing to keep in mind is what stakes you're trying to apply a “new concept”. This is because at low/mid stakes a more “straight-forward” game is profitable imo, where as the things you might see the pros do are done in a 100r w/ villians they have history w/, or maybe even in a 1k where the level of thinking is on a much higher level. Just my 2cents, glgl in your quest sir, hope you're back to crushing soon.
hey guys,
wanna add my 2cents since I just recovered from the exactly same spot:
To make it short, I had been a winning MTT midstakes reg for a couple years and even fared well in live MTTs up to 2k and such being a nit without many moves.
Problems being a nit:
-too many allins to survive in big fields
-being short on deepruns (I finaltabled the million, the 500 and other majors and never even had a shot at winning)
-being predictable on higher stakes (you are never the feared one at the table and get picked on)
Where being a nit works:
-Turbos -> everyones short fairly early
-small fields where you need fewer allins till FT
-micro/lowstakes where you get donations anyway, just less often as a nit since you are less often involved
I needed a good 3-5 months too get to a point where I am happy with my game and obviously made a decent number of misstakes, maybe sharing those will help some of you:
-trying new stuff on my usual buyins level (needed way to long to realize my changes were making me loosing since i wasnt fully taking risks) -> fearless tries on micros/lows
-continue multi/masstabling -> i used to be playing 12-20 tables at the start and then sometime even add new ones when i busted some earlies
-> no focus on early deepruns, pretty much too little focus on everything -> start (meaning first 1-2h hours) with whatever number of tables you are comfortable but then dont open new ones so you can focus on your deepruns every time, if your early game is at focus, try 1-tabling that can be really rewarding!
and another non-session tip: rewatch some good vids you have seen before, its amazing how many things you pick up the 2nd read
try new stuf and dont be scared to fail!
what others have said – when someone is introducing new concepts – it takes a while to apply them correctly. It is trial and error to figure out what concepts work for your game and what concepts you aren't applying properly.
Make sure you are talking to others about these new things you are trying to make sure you are doing them correctly.
Also – I'm not sure how long you've been a member – but variance of over a year is not that uncommon and it could be as simple as that.
