Guys,
I am sure you all have noticed that I have not been on in awhile. Well this has many reasons, all of you may know that I am currently a college student, currently have a girlfriend that I have been with for 4 years, and currently co-oping/interning. Finding time to play poker can be rough and when the time does come I want to win so you can imagine how the bad days feel to me, 🙁
What I would like from you guys is help. I need help with squeezing in poker with my schedule, I need help with making the initiative to play as well (I will go into further detail about that). So, here is what's happening, my weekly routine.
Mon – Thursday, I work for my co-op job (IT job – I am in Computer Science) from 8 til 5. After work, me and a few friends that I live with it while working here for the semester go do P90x, well we get out around 630 then get home about 7ish. I drink my protein shake, take a shower, have a lil grub and by then its probably 8. I try to go to bed b/w 10 and 10:30 b/c I have to wake up at 6:45. So, I have maybe 2 to 2 and half hours to do anything I want.
Friday – Sunday, Well Friday I get out of work at 3:30 but I drive back home to see my girlfriend which is about 2 1/2 hours away. So, I am there by 6 sometimes 6:30. I hang out with my girlfriend on friday night, so Friday is shot and out of the picture. Now on Saturday, if she is working I hang out with my brother who lives and goes to college with me. If she isnt working and my brother is, I spend the day with her. If they both arent working, we all hang out. Now if both of them are working, I go back to my apartment spend an hour or 2 with my brother before he goes to work and by then I have a 2 to 3 hour window to do anything. Now for Sunday, it is shot just like Friday because of the driving. Sunday I normally sleep til noon. I spend some time with my girlfriend before she goes to work or before I have to leave then I drive back to my workplace b/c they have supplied a house with the works to live in while I co-op.
Recap:
Mon thru Thursday – I have like 2 to 3 hours. Depends on the work out.
Friday – I don't even bother
Saturday – A lot of depends
Sunday – I don't even bother again.
When it's over: I get done co-oping on January 7th. This is my last time co-oping to get the seal on my degree, the quality work experience for my resume, and some bank to pay for tuition, books, rent, food, and utilities. School starts back on the 10th and I only have class on Tuesday and Thursday. The downfall of being done co-oping is I have to go back to work to keep accumulating money for school. However, I should have more time to play (I hope).
All I really want to know is what can I do? Have you guys dealt with this? I just want some kind of closure, I feel like I never get to play.

My only advice is don't cut into your time with your girl and use that to play poker if you have a nice relationship.
Girlfriend > Poker
It's only 2 more months before your schedule gets better. If you've been doing this for a while my advice is to just hang in there and wait out these last 8 weeks. Poker's not going anywhere.

Just sucks man. I sometimes watch the ocasional vid in that span of 2 and half hours but hell in that time I can watch 1. Cutting GF time is def not happening, so me and you are on the same page there.
During your driving time you can listen to the podcasts from TPE or any other reputable podcasters (PM me if you want more suggestions).
Try to use the time for studying and play when you can. With limited time to play, stick to shorter games like turbo 180's (take 2hrs if you FT), 90 man, 45 man etc…
As Fk says poker isn't going anywhere, focus on learning more now to prepare for when you do have more time to play.
Does your brother like poker?

My brother will play but this is what he does…All-in, and wait, wait for it….All-in…He has no patience.
As far as podcasts go, I am thinking about buring them on a CD and listening to them in my truck. I have an older CD player that does not have an AUX I/O so I cannot connect to my MP3 player unless I get a tuner to broadcast it from a dormant station which I have used before and the clarity is staticy and sucks.
Im with ya bro. I start back to school in a few weeks so I am trying to get as much poker in now as I can. It seems like your schedule will open up in a couple months so I would just hang in there until then. You definatly don't want your relationships to suffer over trying to make time playing cards.
P.S.- Kudos on working your ass off man. Good job.

Its just hard man. I think in my free time I may try to squeeze in some 180s or 45s…But I will be honest, I am pretty sure my ROI is not great in those.
How long do the turbo and the non turbos last on these?

The turbo 180's usually take about 2 hours and the non turbo 180's usually take about 4.5 hours if i remember correctly. I am not sure about the 45's.
Damn, I am not that good at turbo 180s…I either don't play them enough to see the benefits, don't play them correctly, and/or I get upset when I don't do well.
UGH!

Well some other options would be ring games or maybe 1 table and 2 table sng's. I think that you can work on your game in general in any of the formats. IMO the 1 and 2 table sng's are good for working on end game play for mtt's.
agree with this – before i started playing lots of MTTs i was playing turbo 6max SNGs, and as a result, i find that i close out games really well, especially as soon as it gets short handed.
i know where you are coming from though BBird, its tough.
at one stage i was working 2 jobs as well as going to uni and i had a fiance at the time.
now i work full time and have a wife and a mortgage. its pretty hard to find time for everything.
what i end up doing is setting aside 1 night a week as poker night, on a mutually agreed night between me and the wife. this means that i get at least 1 night of poker for the week. then if there are any other times where we have nothing on i sometimes play them as well, but if i dont then it doesnt matter because i get at least 1 night a week.
i would reccomend the turbo 6max sngs because they only take about 40 mins if you win and its a long one, so if you can 8 table them you can smash though 20+ per hour.
I definitely suggest when you have time only playing MTT sngs like the 45 mans and the 90 mans. Nothing effects your game more than running short on time while playing an MTT that requires a ton of patience.
Since your schedule will be lighter starting in January, I would really set poker aside for the time being. Poker will always be there, but ruining a relationship (business, personal, schooling) is something you could regret for the rest of your life.
Guys thanks for all the replies. I would have replied more yesterday but my roommates wanted to go out after work for dinner, beer, and a movie. Then today I was slammed at work and I had no time to surf the internet…lol
So looks like SnGs up to 90 man and 180 turbo is the way to go on a short time frame

sitngos are nice option when time is of the essence and sitngos are also a great way to smooth out all the fundamentals of the game just dont expect to get rich sitngo poker is somewhat figured out and if you can maintain a +10% roi your smashing the game.
Thx for that TT. Sometimes I get too worried about how much I am winning rather than what my ROI is.
What are the main concepts I should be focusing on in the SnGs? This is what I know: Good push/fold game, stack size play, bubble play (cashing is more important here, right?), anything else?

im prolly not your best option for sitngo strategy as i cant stand playing them anymore. the only advice i do have is to set up a rakeback acct so those breakeven days are now profitable.
Yeah that is the only reason I play on FTP is so I can get something back better than nothing.
