Last night I made a final table on $2r on pokerstars.  When we got down to the final 4 and  then we made a deal.  I was the chip leader at that point so I got the biggest piece.  I was wondering though, what are the thoughts of the pros when making deals?  This was the first deal I have made so I wasn’t 100% sure what I should be looking for in the numbers or how to break things down to make sure I get the best deal.  The numbers given to us by Pokerstars were alright but the more I think about them, I am not sure if I should have agreed to the deal.

Any advice from anyone would be much appreciated!  Is there some where on the web I can go and check the numbers?

Hopefully my question makes sense.

(Side note: After the deal was made, we played down to the winner and I eventually took it down)

Making deals is usually fine given how top heavy the payouts can be if you guys are close at all in chips.  You'll see a lot of players scoff at the suggestion but in rare cases (like the top top pros such as the ones here) no one's edge is big enough to really account for the high variance.  If you are like 50bbs deep and someone is bad then fine.  But if the chips are equal and you are shallow dealing is usually ok.

Also, the fact that you won after really should be of no consequence and you shouldn't feel any remorse because of it.  Certainly the fact that you guys already made a deal affected the outcome.

I am not a pro, but my feeling is that if the difference between first and 4th is a huge chunk of your roll, then you should make a deal.

I.e if you have a 5k roll and are playing for 1k up top, and 4th is like 400 or something, then i wouldnt take a deal, but if you added a zero for each of those prizes, then the difference between first and 4th is now a massive difference to your overall roll and i think a deal should be taken

At what stack depth do you pros typically feel like a skill edge has been reduced to negligable. For example, I feel in lo stake liveaments that there is still a big edge in restealing and push/fold down to 12-15 BBs with antes, since I see villains make terrible laydowns. Online I feel this is a deeper threshold, maybe 15-18BBs when skill starts to have little bearing.

Am I overestimating the play left this shallow?

I think you are very much right about live.  you have alot more fold equity than online, and if your push fold game is up to par you should have some edge.  That being said, how many times have we lost with AK to AQ at a final table?  I think it is just important to factor in all of the elements discussed here and make the best decision for YOU.  Field strenght, bank roll, how important is the money to you…and can you LIVE with busting 5th when you have a slight chiplead but everyone is 15-20 bbs deep?  If that wont phase you, go for the win!

I think everything said so far is pretty spot on. While live players tend to have 0 push/fold game, they are perfectly capable of waking up. Or having a feeling about Q2s or some shit. So like kb said, it depends how how valuable the chop would be to you.
