Stars $11 tourny 99 paid 45 or so remain I'm in the middle of the field with about 23BB.

Table has been playing really tight, villain on the button has been an absolute rock. I havent seen him play a hand for the last 3-4 orbits then this happens

I just think this is really spewy and absolutely no need to call river, wtf did he think he was beating??

So I'm thinking about this and thinking maybe he's a bit tilted, a bit over it.

The next hand he busts me and I think he played the hand really well. I just thought he was getting a bit spewy and was in a **** it, final table or bust kind of mood.

I found it really hard to range him but in retrospect if I had put in more effort to range him I probably would have folded. I'm thinking TJs, QJs, JQo, KQo. Never never putting him on QQ there. Oh well highlights the need to work on ranging people at the least.

What do you guys think about opening AT from that position with that stack size?

Villain was definitely a bit spewy in the hand you highlight but what is interesting is that he seems to be a tricky type. I mean he three bets preflop and then check/raises on a board that he really should be betting.

Your hand is weak to raise in that position but ok if it is a weak table. I tend to fold it though at a tougher table as you can often end up in really tough spots. Also you have 23bbs so your raise plus a failed cbet is quite costly oop at this stage as you have to think a steal will not get through too often.

His call probably means that he has broadway cards, maybe a stronger medium pair or a monster trying to trap as one of the blinds has 20bbs and the other has a decent size stack. I usually feel 88+ and AJ+, KQ, maybe TJ/QJs etc is in range but weighted more toward broadway cards. I would be especially leery here if the villain has never shown much in the way of calling tendencies though.

Flop is tricky for you and your stack size. I actually might check here for control and call a bet from him as I think you are getting raised a ton on that board by top pair, spade draws, open end straight draws etc as well as hands even stronger than that.

Personally, having bet I would fold as his raise really looks like he means business. After all, he check raised to a minimum when he had nothing (and also his opponent bet was very weak in that hand which encourages players to take a shot) which makes me feel he would raise small here with a weak hand or nothing. Also note that your bet here is almost half pot so there is less chance he will take a shot with air meaning he has a lot of value hands and draws with good equity against you even if you have top pair here.

Fold pre imo, 23 BB effective we really dont have the stack to be getting tricky and are very often crushed or in a marginal spot.

Can you leave the results out next time though, its hard not to be results orientation when we know what he has…just tell us what he had after.
