Hi guys,

This is a hand from a WPT final table that I watched recently and realized I find myself in this spot way too many times. Let me explain the hand for you and tell you what I usually do here. I would love to get your comments as to what you guys would do at this spot as well.

Final table, 6 handed. Blinds 20k-40k-5k ante

Seat 1 (CO) – 6.7M  *V1*

Seat 3 (D)  – 4.2M

Seat 2 (SB)   – 4.2M  *Hero*

Seat 4 (BB)   – 1.5M  *V2*

Seat 5 (MP)  – 1.7M

Seat 6 (HJ)   – 2.9M

V2 is a cash game regular, usually very aggressive.

PF action: V1 raises to 100k

Hero flats from SB with Kspade Qspade

V2 shoves all-in, V1 folds, action on Hero.

Now, here's my thinking –

V2 is the shortest stack at the table, still ~40BB. By raising and getting folds, he can easily increase his stacks by 6BB. But since he is sufficiently deep and all in, I would put him on a reasonable hand, AQs+, 55+, but not AA or KK. More likely a pocket pair (since my KQ voids some combos of AK, AQ, KK and QQ). If I read him on a pocker pair more often than not, with 2 overs and suited cards, I have roughly 50% equity. I cover the V2's stack by 3x, and even if I lose, I will still have 70BB. But one consideration is that the chips will go to the player on my left.

In this situation, I think I would actually (and mostly incorrectly) make a crying call with KQ. What do you think is the right play?

I’d 3-bet pre , as for calling the shove , figure out your opponents range , pot odds you’re getting and figure out which hands to call with. If you have enough equity then its a call, I must say though even so v is aggressive, i don’t think he’ll be shoving too wide here , given ICM consideration.

As for pot odds –

30k antes, 100k from V1, 100k from Hero, 1.5M from V2. so, hero needs to call 1.4 to win 3.1, and has to be good 45% of the time. V2's range of AQs+, AKo, 55+ (and not AA or KK) gives us 43%, if I include KK, it gives us 41%. It does seem like a losing call here.

But folding_aces_pre_yo,

how do you find a fold when you are actually in that situation? Is it that you have analyzed so many hands that you *know* you are a 40-60 dog against villain's range?

I have analyzed many hands yeah but that don't mean im a expert 🙂

Yes it's a losings call for sure , however that don't mean we can't call right? sometimes we may take a negative EV call , just like this one. I mean it's not like we are risking our tourney life here, like you said if we lose we still will be left with a big stack. Anyhow , let's just say we do call, which impacts would this take on our table image?

I also think before u make the call pre , you really should think what you're going to do if you're faced with a squeeze , makes it so much easier when the action comes back to you.

I think he's saying the image EV gained outweighs the cEV lost, when he calls an all-in bet with KQs.
