Hey all,

New to the site and loving it so far.  Maybe a stupid question but Ill ask anway.  I was wondering what pros at TPE spend a good amount of time playing in live tournaments vs online.  I know all have live experience but didn't know if there were perhaps 1 or 2 that have had quite a bit of experience in live.  Going through the content I realize that alot can be applied to live games but have'nt seen anything focused on live.  I'm probably missing something.  Thanks in advance.

Hi Dscott,

Welcome to TPE! To answer your question, I'm not entirely sure which TPE pros would have the most live experience but I would be surprised if there are any who have spent more of their career playing live than online. It's just much, much harder to get good at poker playing mostly live, since you play so many fewer hands in the same space of time.

In terms of the content on the site, the simple answer is that it's extremely difficult to make video content about live poker, because there's no structured way to record hand histories and all the live poker that appears on TV is obviously copyrighted by the companies that distribute it. That said, if there's a way to do it, it's probably something one of us could look into.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your reply! I agree with your point on playing online.  I would love to start doing it but really need some advice on which sites to play on.  I live in Missouri and we are one of the states that make it tough to play online.  I do see though that some sites allow residents from Missouri.  I have no idea which Hud to use or if most of the online sites even allow them.  Any information that  you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Can you play on Merge?  If so Id suggest Carbon or PokerHost.  If you can play on Winning Network I suggest True Poker.

Bovada also has a really good tourney schedule for the US.  I hate the anonymous player thing they have, but i put up with it becayse the fields are sooo soft.

All of those allow HUDs (I personally use HoldEm Manager, but some people are fans of Poker Tracker.  Its just preference really.

Hey Derek,

Thanks for the info.  I know Missouri players can't play on Carbon.  I will have to check out poker host and True Poker.  If you don't mind me asking, because I have no online xp I would be interested in your thoughts concerning which games to begin with.  Cash, tourney, stakes etc?  You mention Bovada being soft so maybe that would be best lol.  Anyhow, sorry for the newb questions just want to have a solid plan.  I have been immersed in TPE content and still want to take a little more time before I start.  Your input is greatly appreciated.

Hi Ginger; I think I disagree with you about that.  I think that a cool video on live poker can be made.  One way to do it would be to have a coach play a tournament series of 4 or 5 events and make notes on key hands.  Then put those hands into a replayer and analyze them on a video.  Add in some general tips about live poker and all of a sudden you have a great video.  It could be called something like:  Live Tournament Poker:  Hands from the December 2013 WSOPC Event”  I actually think a video like that would be very useful to players, and also a very popular feature.  Just saying.

Im actually in talks with several guys who consider themselves to be more live pros then online wizards and were still trying to figure out the best way to present there material so its more directed towards live play in saying that ive always found great success bringing my online game to the real world felt and feel i had advantage over live players just based on volume and hands played. But some video series with specific attention to live play are on there way.

I shouldn't speak for others, but I believe Cory Waaland plays more live than online, or at least he maintains a good balance.
