Live game NLH player with possible move to England, TPE member for a few months. I would appreciate advice on software tools needed and benefits of each if possible. Is a normal laptop correct size to play online if I play more than 2-3 games concurrently? I guess silly questions for online players but as a live game player we are not allowed these tools so I don't know what is needed. Thanks for any help given…..
A laptop would be fine as long as you are not planning to play a ton of tables. I prefer a desktop. I have a desktop with two 28″ monitors and I would not know what to do without the space!
If you are going to play on a laptop, I suggest getting a second monitor (pretty much all laptops support a second monitor these days). This gives you room for skype, forums, etc on the other monitor. Also, dont use the trackpad on your laptop, get a mouse or you will destroy your wrist!
Regarding software, you should not need much to get started. I would suggest HEM or Poker Tracker for sure.

I play 4 tables comfortably on my 15 inch MacBook. I have them semi overlapping so they are still a decent size, but I can see the cards on every table with me in the bottom spot. For sunday's, or days that will be busier, I have a monitor I can plug in, and then I can play 12 tables comfortably – even though it's a horrible idea for me.
PT4 or HEM2 is probably the biggest software, even if you only use it for the tracking to begin with. As Killingbird mentioned, get a GOOD mouse. I use higher end gaming mice, pretty much anything that Razer makes will be good. Online poker isn't too system demanding, so a high end system isn't really needed. Just have a secure laptop that runs well and you should be fine.

Laptop is fine for only a few tables. You'll need HM2/PT4, a decent and comfortable mouse, and a comfortable chair/desk to grind with at a minimum. It would also be a good idea to get a hold of whatever studying software you prefer (CREV, HRC, ICMIZER, etc), and a second monitor would be helpful. I've experimented with various setups and I think comfort is really underrated as a contributing factor in optimal performance. Good luck!
