I got destroyed in a live $400 Borgata event and wanted opinions about an early hand that left me short early.  Blinds 50/100  Stacks all mainly around 25,000 as its really early and haven’t played many hands.  No real reads except the villain UTG has a nice watch, is in his thirties and seems arrogant. He’s raised a few hands already and seems aggro.

UTG (V) limps,  CO limps , Hero  QheartQclubraises to 400.  UTG and CO call.

Flop  2diamond10diamond7spade

Check, Check,  Hero bets 900,  UTG reraises to 2000, Hero reraises to 5000, Villain jams all in 25,000,  Hero folds after asking why he bet so much with a flush draw. Villain confidently says “Its only $400”

Villain shows the 4diamond

I put his range as sets or flush draws but am thinking now that he wouldn’t jam that much with a set.  Live low buyin tourneys kill me.  Thoughts?

Why did you 3-bet the flop? What were you hoping would happen?

I think you want to play for a smaller pot with QQ and 250bb, I would flat his 3 bet for pot control and bluff catching.

I ranged him on any A, smaller pps, suited connectors and face cards.  I was 3 betting for value and to narrow his range. Mistake?

In retrospect this is a clear call. Thanks for your help.  I find that live and online are completely different and have trouble making the transition.  Gotta watch some more videos.  LOVE yours Andrew. Keep up the great work.

Agree with Andrew and others.  I wouldn’t 4bet the flop, just call……  esp in a Borg or Park $300/$400.  Some regs have multiple bullets to waste and don’t mind making this play the way your oppnt did.  That’s the mind set of some who plays in these events 1’s or 100k gtd events.  Esp the regs who have multi bullets to fire.  Just play solid and make smart decisions…………  Let the donks PUNT because they

Thanks P-aire.  I’m a regular on the weekends at Parx.  I play 1/2- 2/5.  I’m guessing I’ve seen you there.  If you see a short guy in a Alabama sweatshirt there, say hello.

I’m a reg in all the Borg & Parx tourneys.  I’ll be the one wearing Michigan or Penn St gear.  I’ll make sure I look out 🙂  glgl sir

I don’t know how y’all are agreeing with me when I never gave an opinion, just asked a question 😉

I will point out, though, that Britch still hasn’t really answered the question “What were you hoping would happen?” Just because you believe you have the best hand doesn’t automatically mean you should raise.

It’s also not at all obvious to me that “narrowing his range” is a good thing. If he raises the flop with lots of hands that you beat, but only continues to the 3-bet with hands that beat you, then narrowing his range was actually quite bad for you!

I brilliantly narrowed his range down to sets and flush draws, so I’m behind and can’t call.  Awesome playlaugh.  Thanks again

so what did the limping wizards have sir?  Just love the thinking of some in these Borgata lower buyins.  Gotta be honest, with all the limp/calling I see in those, it makes me wanna join in and do it as well.  LOL

Whether you can call or not depends on the proportion of each one. Villain can only have a maximum of 9 combinations of sets (3x TT, 3x 77 and 3x 22), so you need to be more specific about how many flush draws they can have as well. If you think villain can limp-call with literally any two suited cards, then they might have enough flush draws for you to still be getting the right odds. If you think they’re only limping with suited broadways, then probably not.

Not sure what your intention was in asking why they bet so much with a flush draw. Did you do this before you folded or after? If the villain said “it’s only $400” before you made the decision to fold, that seems like something that should make you call, but if you’re not going to call after hearing something like that, why ask the question? People actually tell the truth a lot when you ask questions like that, so there’s a good possibility villain just doesn’t care about $400, hence the seeming confident. If you folded and then asked, I wonder whether you would still have posted this hand if villain had shown you a set. 😉

The problem isn’t what you did or didn’t do in this hand it’s the fact that you thought it left you short.

Attempting to do a little math here, bear with me. I’m seeing QQ having 46% equity against a flop shoving range of 22,77,TT-AA (I think he could be shoving an over pair here, weird but it happens) and any two suited diamonds. Take away the big pairs JJ-AA and your equity goes to 49% on the flop shove. Calling about 18700 to win a pot of around 50400 is about 37%. So looks like a call if he’s limp-calling any two suited and shoving any flush draw or set. So you can toss out a few of the worst and still be a call. Matter of fact, looks like if he’s check-calling any 2 suited and only shoving sets and any two diamonds with an A or K,  you still have 38.4% equity. So still a call unless is his range is pretty tight.  I guess Andrew is right (surprise..) when you asked about the flush draw, you kinda heard what you wanted, and the question is how wide is his range.

If I’m totally wrong please correct me. Just trying to learn this stuff myself.
