Hello guys,

i recently played a 550$ reentry tourney at the local casino. the tournament structure was really deep starting 20k stack 30min levels for the first 4levels then switching to 45min untill level 10 and then 60min levels.

the tournament was quite large for swiss relations having 3start days with re entry up to level5. it was special in a way that you could re enter on the same day and even buy in the next day again if you used both your bullets.

Well, so we were about 100players going into day2 with 35being paid about 1k min cash. the hand i want to discuss starts right after the bubble. Pre bubble play was pretty tight as lots of players wanted to make the min cash.

in the following hand i am on the BTN and facing the following table draw:

SB: older live reg, decently aggressive, knows to put pressure on shorter stacks. he is about 3in chips on the table

BB(we call him Joe here 😉 ): young internet player, TAG style, knows lots about ranges of raising/3-betting and also knows my LAGish style. additionally i have 10% of him as he is a friend. Chipleader of the tournament

UTG: good, young live player. short stacked with about 15BB

UTG+1: middle aged man, NIT overplaying hands and also over raising overbetting his few hands

UTG+2:young internet player, know him very good from online forums. 2nd in chips in the tournament

UTG3: old nit, short stacked

HJ: old nit, short stacked

CO:middle aged man, no history, about 18BB

BTN: me the fish 🙂 was playing a ,20BB stack most of the day. doubled up to 40BB wenn i got AK over a limp and got isoraised by the SB in this hand. i then raised T6s HJ and had to call a 3BB stack shove from BTN when the Joe was not yet at the table. earlier i raised 73s on the CO, got 3bet by the Joe and click back folded to his 5bet jam with about 45BB effective. he later told me that he had AK. i am in with 1entry and one rebuy. so it cost me 1100$plus around 150$ for travel and food/drinks

generally, not the best table you can get with all the good players to your left and only nits to your right.

so to the hand.

Its folded around to the CO at 3k/6k/500 and he makes it 17.5k with about 110k behind. I look at my hole cards and see the good old AclubKclub. I make it 37.5k(about 210k behind) to raise and get it in vs the CO either preflop or on the flop if he decides to flat and shove post. It gets to the BB(Joe) who looks at his cards, tanks for a minute and then ask about stacks of me and CO. CO rather reluctantly tells his stack size and i just say “about 200k'. Joe tanks for another minute or so and then announces all in. The CO insta folds and it gets back to me.

In game I insta called as I thought 35BB CO,BTN, BB thats a no brainer as i range BB to (99)TT+, AQ+ and i will make a deep run in the tournament if winning this one

there are just a few things i would like to address:

1.)do you think the range is ok given the information provided

2.) do you call looser knowing that you are against a guy you have shares? basically if i win i have a decent stack to make a deep run and if he doubles its even more likely that he makes it to the final table. so my $EV is higher even if the cEV play might be slightly bad.

3.) do you fold if CO calls as you are racing against at least one and may share some outs with one of them

4.) are there other things i should consider?

thanks for advice

cheers

Thats a very interesting table dynamic.

1) as the CO is a) an unknown with a relatively short stack b) a middle aged man, you would assume he is capable of opening a reasonable range from CO but is probably only going with premiums to a 3 bet.

2) your friend knows you know this

3) CO open, BTN 3bet = good spot to cold 4bet from BB given the players / image of those involved

4) all that said your 3bet is committed to calling the all in from the CO, but your friend would know that you know your equity ranges right? so you could be making this move decently wide

5) BB also knows you know he plays a TAG style, therefore his 4bet looks genuinely strong

What I'm getting at is the BB, using his table image and meta game dynamics with you, can make this move fairly wide to pick up a decent size pot preflop. Of course the resqueeze shove is the best way to get action with premium pockets.

Given your image and the dynamics of the situation i think your hand is way to strong and far to pretty to be folded here – I make the call.

PS dont ever underestimate or too tightly stereo type the middle ager(s) – I'm one of them!
