I was watching a Lex Veldhuis stream yesterday and I noticed that with a short stack, he kept raising big pre-flop but leaving some chips behind instead of shoving all-in.  It was clear he was committing himself but not moving all-in.  Is there a strategy behind that?  E.g. With 12 BBs, he would raise 8-9 BB.

Perhaps a psychological thing – some people are so apt to click call a lot of the time but now they have to raise so maybe you get more folds this way.

Another thing it could allow would be for him to use maximum time in order to stall near a bubble or payjump. He can use max time on every action and ladder up.

Overall, not gonna be a huge difference either way but these are some possible benefits.

Sometimes on the bubble it gives you a chance to fold if the opponent doesn’t put you all in before the river and you miss completely. Or it allows him to stall twice.

I think the bigger reason is when people are multitabling, they might just see a big raise and not that you’re almost all in. That’s more of a move when you have like 2.3 big blinds, maybe you minraise to 2 bigs, hoping that the big blind is multitabling and mucks a bad hand without thinking.

^ this. I see all the time regs go all-in for all practical purposes but without actually shoving. On Stars it is obvious when someone shoves, so by not shoving exactly all your chips it might look like a simple raise to a villain who isn’t paying close attention. Apart from this, can’t think of any other benefit.

Hi – first TPE post…

The other reason I think some people do this is in significant ICM territory with bigger pay jumps (final tables in higher buy ins with shallower structures, mainly). The idea there seems to be if 3 or more people have a shove stack you can put in e.g. 8 or 9 of your bigs and get away if someone else shoves and gets callers.

This approach was discussed at one of the recent GGPoker super millions table streams, though I’m not convinced it’s really ever a good play.
