I want to start toying with playing much more aggressive early in large field tournaments online. I want some various input about playing higher variance early in tournaments.
I feel in tournaments once I have 2x avg. I cruise extremely deep in tournaments. although to get 2x avg. early it implies some gambling on occasion in certain spots. Thoughts?
One problem using that strategy in this type of tourney is that the very worst players or the rec players that just want to double up or go home come out slinging in the first couple of levels. You can forget about hand reading because they do things that don't make sense. Watching for their tendencies is more important I believe. And at the same time your value hands are more likely to be paid off in these levels.
. So personally, I wouldn't be trying to force the action in the first few levels, I would take it as it comes.
But trying to build a good stack early by gambling here and there and playing solidly afterwards is a strategy that you probably can't say is wrong either.
As far as average stacks are concerned, I feel the stack average is totally meaningless to how you should be playing your own stack.

i would just say, be prepared to flip if off with AQ or JJ early. personally, i like playing pretty tight though
The strategy of Double Up or Go Home assumes that you can use a large stack to bully the table and get people to fold.
The problem with being aggressive online versus being aggressive live is that people aren't nearly as tight. People play back at you with AJ (or weaker aces), middle pairs, KJ, and in their world KQ is the nuts. It's hard to get the majority of players to fold just because you have a 2x stack

i thought examining tendencies and hand reading were one and the same thing.
a player's tendencies gives me some indication of what sort of range they have, and then you ask yourself what part of that range makes sense on this board.
if you play 1 table you can do this by just looking at the player, if you play 10 tables then you have to work it out by looking at stats. but its still one and the same thing imo
