Live Tourney: $350 Buy-In

3000/ 6000/ 500

Down to 11 and 10 pay. For the record, 10th pays about same as entry fee and 9th pays 2x entry fee.

We are 5 handed and V is UTG. He is 30 y.o. Indian.

He has 10BB

Notable recent hands: He is not a NIT by any means. He’s been fairly active throughout but since he’s had 10BB he appropriately tightened up some. I did see him shove AI (from UTG) with 10bb with 33 an orbit or two prior.

He and I are the 2 shortest stacks in the game. I have 20 BB and he has 10 BB. There are one or two others (at other table) with 25 BB or so.

He open shoves from UTG and I am in BB with KQs. What do we assess his range as? And is this an easy call?

I don’t give much to age or race. Nationally, we’re all equals at the table.

If I was the V, with 10BB left UTG and 4 players to act after me, it would depend on how the others have been playing. I would definitely be playing tighter due to stack size. If still playing loosely, I would be shoving nearly any 2 cards, especially an Ax, possibly Kx suited, and go with gusto! Also I may be shoving with any pocket pair in his shoes. For me it’s do or die at this point.

It’s not an easy call, against someone who hasn’t been a NIT and can be shoving any 2 cards at this point unless you’ve got a good assessment on how he was playing hands prior. He could have any suited broadway or suited connector. Either way if he’s tightened up, then shoves UTG, he woke up with some hand. You’re best bet is a coin flip situation if you make the call; that’s if everybody else folded to you. But to be honest, I may have a hard time folding in your position.

You mentioned you see him make a play UTG with Al?? How about his betting patterns on hands that didn’t go to showdown? Anything you noticed?

Ultimately, what ended up happening and the results?

Yeah prior to this he is definitely an aggressive player. He plays a lot of hands. I’d say he is a “Gambler” type. He can accrue a big stack. This particular hand I thought my equity to be around 45-50% vs his range and if he did decide to play his broadways then we go up from there. It was close but since it was not for my tourney life I felt a call was appropriate. And the fact that I was playing to go deep and not for min cash helped this decision. Just not sure if it was correct or not.

If you really want to know results I will post them after a few more replies. I don’t like to post those as it really is not relevant to the discussion too much IMO.

Icmizer is giving me a 24% shoving range for him, and a 17% calling range for you, but that is missing stack size info on the other players that would affect the outcome.

KQs has about 52% equity in that situation, which isn’t great. A very close spot IMO. One that I would likely pass on, but that could be wrong. I’m interested to see what other folks have to say. I hate having to flip in this spot on the bubble.

Edit: as I was writing this post you added that is was aggressive and a “gambler” type, which would definitely push me towards a call. The read is crucial.

Yes. The read is absolutely crucial here. In any case, I would fold here since I can’t imagine an UTG shove with KJ or worse. At best you are racing against his 33-JJ or you are 40% if he holds an A.

I like your description of the villain.  If the guy was kind of loose like you say I would call.  For tighter opponents I would fold without a second thought.  But you have 20bb here, he has 10bb.  Worse case scenario you are not going to be knocked out this hand and you are probably ahead.  I would take it.

In 5-handed play he should be shoving quite wide here. Since you’ve explained that he’s not a nit by any means, this is a fairly comfortable call. It’s hard to see you not having the 42-43% equity you need here. I’m sure it’s a Nash/ICM call even with the bubble, so you don’t have to worry too much about it.
