This time I was decent stacked already hence didn’t want to shove for the sake of it. Bubble was 7th place and was around 16 players left so it wasn’t quite a bubble spot. Guy 2 places before me makes a 3 x on about same chip stack as me (6000/7000). Blinds are 150/300. Rest of the table are 10bb or below, including the BB guy who shoves his 3000. We both folded! I called pre flop thinking I have position on this guy so can play a normal pot with him given his similar chip stack, forgetting that in these SNG’s there is a strong chance of a shove behind from the BB position.
I know my play is flawed here somehow – comments welcome.
Should I have shoved pre flop or called the shove after the initial raiser folded? Or neither?
How the heck do you play these push/fold SNG’s when you find yourself slightly ahead of the field?

I'd just fold pre-flop. You really shouldn't be calling many raises with a 20ish BB stack, and your instinct is right that this isn't a good spot to put your stack at risk.

Ok. Folding KQ on the button is new territory for me, unless there has been a re-raise before it reaches me of cause. Is this advice specific to SNG’s or more to any tournament situation where the majority of the field are sitting on 10-20 bb’s? I can understand now since a call here was still around 15% of my chips & also in SNG’s a shove behind from the BB should be no surprise in that spot.
Hope I’m on the right tracks, for example in a deeper stacked situation it’s ok to call & play a pot I hope?

Depends on the opener, but yeah I'd be much more inclined to call (or 3bet) with deeper stacks. It's nothing to do with the SNG format per se, this would be true in any situation (SNG, MTT, cash) where the effective stacks are only 20BB.

Thank you, really, being aware of my effective stack size should help me avoid making loose calls, I hope.
