I'm going to show the whole hand – hope that's OK. Would like some feedback if this is terrible or not. The hand converterdidn't seem to work right.

Just a little stunned right now because I was riding between 8-15 bbs for the longest time around the bubble, paying 99th place. I doubled up and then tripled up when I got 88 in vs AJ and AJ and then had some chips to work with.

Just before this I won a nice hand and was 8th in chips with around 40bbs. I know this player was close to 70% folding to 3bets, but tbh, I didn't check his numbers fr ep which I normally would do. The adrenaline was flowing a bit I guess.

But I figured this 3bet by me would look super strong because my image must have been pretty tight. My turn betsizing was such that I wanted to send him a message I'm playing for stacks and I really expected a fold. A friend was watching and he later told me when the player shoved I instantly called. He told me I should take my hand off the mouse in a spot like that. In a smaller mtt I probably would have paused and thought about it.

Anyway, this is not like me to blow the tournament in a hand that left me playing out of position like this and I definitely have to control the adrenaline rush in these bigger tournaments.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

First of all when facing an under the gun raiser expect him to have strength, I usually assume TT-AA. If the bet is to big then I lay it down unless I have a pretty good hand. If the bet is small I will take a chance with the flop but in most cases I lay it down as I usually see KK or AA. If I do call I usually check the flop unless I hit a monster just because I am expecting a broadway pair from the UTG raiser. Unless I had KK or AA or a solid read on a donk I would not 3-bet pre-flop. I am not sure I would have called his preflop raise even though it is only 2x but I am on the nitty side.

Two things i see in here,

1. I think the 3bet size is a bit small. You are really only min-reraising him (9k vs 7k, but close enough here) which I don't think is going to scare away an EP raiser unless he is treating it like the new BTN. So I am not sure I glean much more detail about his potential range from him flatting the 3bet there.

2. When you lead out there (which I think is fine since you took the lead in the hand) and he insta-jams over you I think the range he is on narrows up a lot and I am not in love with my hand at all. I agree that the heat of the moment is brutal and is most likely what got you to call here.

All in all, i agree with you, i think you got blinded by the moment a bit.

I completely sympathize. Hand of the mouse is definitely solid advice. I got caught up in a similar situation yesterday. I snap called an obvious super strong shove in the heat of the moment. If I would have taken just 5 seconds to process what was happening I feel like I would have gotten away but instead it was: bang, snap, DOH!!!

if i'm going to 3 bet an utg it's going to be with a monster or air.  Obviously with a monster because i'm ahead of his range if i am holding QQ+, AK+.  With air because I can shut down if he plays back and if he does call and i hit a flop i am at lower risk of being dominated.

In this spot, I just think QJ is the wrong hand to pick your time to 3-bet an utg.  If called, like it was, it's just too easily crushed and can be expensive to find out.

If i did chose this spot, I would definitely make it more because we really just want a fold here because post flop is not going to be profitable in any big pots given our kicker, even if we are in position.

Post flop is tough because of the bet sizing/hand.  Not many people can play it profitably given the events so just avoid it.
