$50 buy in tournament. 4000 starting stack. Blinds 600, I have 8000 and I am BB with KK. UTG raises to 1500, folds to me. UTG has been playing aggressively. I think his range could be wide (JQ, 44, etc). My table image is pretty tight.

I raise to 3000. He slowly calls. Flop comes 99A rainbow. Because of his play, I cbet 3000. He tanks and then calls. Turn comes something unimportant. I went ahead and put it all in, he tanks again and calls acting like he is beat. He has AQ off. He says he put me on AK and might have folded had I pushed on the flop.

What do you all think? Do you always give up with an Ace on a flop when holding KK? How could I have played this better? Thanks in advance.

Yes, you should generally check when you have a hand that won’t get calls from worse nor folds from better. That doesn’t have to mean giving up, though in this case I would. Your goal at this point shouldn’t be to try to make your opponent fold an Ace – if you believe he was going to fold AQ, I’ve got a bridge to sell you in Florida 🙂

If he has an Ace, you can’t change that fact by betting. If he doesn’t have an Ace, betting doesn’t do anything for you. OK, maybe it prevents him from bluffing, but I think you just have to accept that you’re going to get bluffed sometimes, it’s better than putting in the rest of your money drawing nearly dead. FWIW, this is a good spot to check if you actually flopped the Ace as well, and that’s the best way to punish him if he bluffs too much in this spot.
