Villian was 13/8 over 99 hands.  I put in a big 3 bet and he min-raises me from the big blind.  I guess I put him on AA or QQ and maybe AK but I did not think that was likely.  I call and after the flop I could not find a had that I beat except for maybe AK so I fold.  Bad fold?

your 3bet sizing is huge, i would have gone to 250-300 or so.

this means that you can easily flat any flop bet and get some better info on his likely holdings

As Benny mentioned your 3-bet was huge which could look fishy to some players. I usually go with 3x their bet for a 3-bet. To be honest I would need a read on my opponent for making a decision post flop. KK is a hand I hate to laydown and AQ is in his raising range. He could think he has the best hand and is protecting it.  The only solid opinion I can give is on your 3-bet size. I am curious to see what other memebers think.

I am not sure I totally mind the 3bet size here. The stacks are really deep so I think you have to goose it a little to get people to pay attention to you. I think if you make it 300 to go (3x+1 for position and a little rounding cause I hate betting weird numbers cool) I don't think you get the desired effect. Post flop his bet isn't all that out of line. I don't think 99 4bets you preflop (if he does gg us). QQ, AQ, AK, AA are all certainly in the 4bet range, but keep in mind that he is in the BB, so the other side of this could very well be that he thinks you are making a move on him and just doesn't want to let you. 13/8 over 100 hands is a really tight player, but a lot of those tendencies tend to fade a bit in BvB conflicts, especially if the BB thinks he is getting picked on. I think there is still a really good chance you are good here and I would at least call the flop bet and see what he does on the river.

I made the 3 bet large because of the raise by UTG+2 and then the cold call by the Button.  I was out of position and I wanted those 2 players to pay a large price for seeing a flop against me.  Generally early in a deep stacked tournament I play my premiums very fast and aggressive and try to avoid multi-way pots with them.

Opon further reflection I think my mistake was probably in not just shipping it in pre-flop.

fwiw Euthanaces is a friend of mine and a VERY good player.  I'll see if he remembers the hand but I'd expect him to have AA here against someone who he probably doesn't know with your line.

It was AA indeed.  Good fold.

He's also impressed you folded KK 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to find out where I stood.  Makes me feel good about my play here although I guess that could be results oriented thinking and from an overall strategic standpoint I think it could still of been a mistake.

It's hard for me to be objective if this is a long-term strategic mistake/results oriented.  I know the player and I know he's never minraising a random player's (in his eyes) 3 bet without AA/KK/QQ and maybe not even QQ.   If he wasn't known to me it would be harder to justify folding but your rational is very solid to me.
