15 left in a $109 deepstack on 888. 12 paid. Hero is shortest stack in the tournament, though 8 players have <20BB.

Villain 1 (MP) is tight, running 15/9/3 over around 60 hands.

Villain 2 on the BTN is bad, and running 58/12/3 but the limping seems to be working for him in this tournament! Villain 2 is also willing to call off light with cards to come, but no evidence he will call pre-flop shoves light.

The rest of the table is playing tight as we approach the bubble.

Hand history below. I’d be interested in views on:

– the pre-flop call. Clearly we’re getting great odds and my plan was to call evaluate. Is there any argument for jamming or folding?

– the best line on the flop.

Blinds 8000/16000 Ante 2000 NL – Holdem – 8 players

BTN: 39.89 BB
SB: 17.62 BB
Hero (BB): 11.83 BB
UTG: 68.25 BB
UTG+1: 25.01 BB
MP: 21.74 BB
MP+1: 16.46 BB
CO: 16.51 BB

8 players post ante of 0.13 BB, SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 2.5 BB) Hero has Kc Td
fold, fold, MP raises to 2 BB, fold, fold, BTN calls 2 BB, fold, Hero calls 1 BB

Flop : (7.5 BB, 3 players) Th 7h 4h

Hero checks, MP checks, BTN bets 2.47 BB, Hero ??

[will post results after responses, thanks]

This is an interesting hand to me, and I’ve been trying to figure out what to do in these types of spots.  It seems suicidal to jam, as the initial raiser will most often rejam, or call, getting 1.8/1.

For the sake of example, let’s just assume the mp raiser jams over your ship.  Against a tightish range (18%), KTo has 38% eq.  One way that I’ve tried to look at this spot, is that essentially (because the initial raiser most often jams over our ship, and the button caller most often folds)  we are putting 12 bbs into a pot that will be 18.5 bbs total, giving ourselves a prospective 1.5/ 1, needing 40% to break even.   Of course, we don’t have that.  I suppose there is a little wiggle room, because once in a while our jam gets through.  But it seems suboptimal, especially given the money bubble considerations.

The safe route seems to be just what you did:  Call, getting 6.5/1, and closing the action.  But with our short stack now consisting of 11 bbs, we find ourselves in no mans land.  If we check to the original raiser, and he bets, and the button does not raise, I personally just feel obligated to get the rest of my chips in on this ten high board ( or a King high board, for that matter).

The other option after calling in the BB is to donk jam the flop.  This prevents the original raiser from checking back, and getting a free card.

I really find myself trying to find a way to fold this hand preflop, which seems absurd given the pot odds we’re being given, and the fact that we’re closing the action.  I just wonder if pot odds don’t take a back seat to stack size/ stack playability considerations, and in this case, money bubble considerations.

I, too, would be interested to hear other people’s opinions on how to play this hand.

You are the shortest stack in the tournament, so ICM isn’t as big of a deal.

You have two big cards preflop. I think calling is the only option preflop. Can easily flop top pair, and then you can get it in. You might have some fold equity, but very little pre given the 2.5 raise, the button flatter, and your stack.

Post-flop is an awkward spot, which you’re going to find plenty of when you flat there. Personally, I think I just jam. KTo is probably good at the moment. You could call, thinking you will fold if a heart comes out, but it’s a disaster if one of them has JTs or QTs and you have to fold, so I don’t love that option.

Donk jamming the flop has the best chance of you winning the pot, which is nice. However, the check shove could catch the button screwing around. He could just be playing big stack bully after the MP checks the flop, and maybe he’ll fold, or maybe you get it in better than you think.

I think I actually like the donk jam the most on the flop. I would like to be able to jam some of my naked ace of hearts for maximum fold equity. KT without a heart seems like a great value hand to balance that with. If you had KT with a heart, check jam seems like a much better strategy. That said, I think check-jam is a fine line here, too.

I think you have either a jam or fold preflop. KTo doesn’t play well multiway. Jamming should give you some FE and if you are called, you could be live. I doubt the BTN has anything amazing since he would probably have 3bet and your stack is big enough that MP shouldnt be calling with his entire opening range. You said MP is tight, so you could just fold.

Either option is fine depending on how you perceive the other two players. I wouldn’t call though.
