This is Hand 4 of a set of hand reviews from a nosedive I recently had the pleasure of piloting.  If you would like to check out Hands 1-3, here are the links.

Hand 1 – …..ck-please/

Hand 2 – …..t-control/

Hand 3 – …..arrelling/

I'm not sure how I feel about this hand.  My image is aggressive, but I may seem on tilt becase I've just handed lots of chips away.  It's possible I am tilting, but I feel this may have been a strong move.

Sweets is brand new to me and folded the first two hands he played.  I can only range him with a standard strong early position opening range: medium/good hands like pocket pairs and strong aces, premiums, and some weak hands like 87s that he may be trying to build an aggressive image with.

KKS1969 has a very wide range.  He is our sticky/loose friend who plays 54/12 limping 41% and 3betting 0%.  I even weigh him away from premiums a bit.

Sweets8 (UTG+1): BB = 27.4, t21960

KKS1969 (HJ): BB = 58.8, t47021

Pre Flop: (t1840) Hero is with T of diamonds J of hearts
1 fold, Sweets8 raises to t1600.00, 1 fold, KKS1969 calls t1600, 3 folds,

Pot is 5040, 800 to call.  I could probably push KKS1969 out if I shoved but not so sure about Sweets.

Hero calls t800

Flop: (t5840) 9 of diamonds 8 of hearts 4 of diamonds (3 players)
Hero checks, Sweets8 bets t3200.00, KKS1969 folds

This is a tough board for either of us to hit.  I don't have huge fold equity but I may get some folds from Cbet bluffs, with weak holdings or even AT-AK.  It's too bad that sets and TT-AA are in his range, but I'm doing some form of ok against all those holdings.

Hero shoves 11,065.

Any thoughts are most appreciated.  Thanks!

I'm going to fold this hand most of the time pre with only 15.9bb, but I play too tight on a small stack.  If I do play it, this is a great flop.  I mean what else are you hoping for?  I'm going to check-jam as Sweets is going to cbet air too often.

I don't like flatting on the BB with 15BB, I'll rather do push or fold and against UTG+1 in this spot I'd fold.

As played though with an open ender and two overcards I'll just shove the flop. I want to shove in that spot as opposed to a check raise because I'm looking for a fold and thus I want to maximize fold equity. It takes away his initiative and even if he calls we have a pretty good chance of wininng against most of his range except maybe QQ.

Thanks guys and thanks for mentioning the merit of shoving flop chaos – I did mean to insert a little “check or shove” line there as obviously I did consider lead/shoving in game.  I guess I chose to check/evaluate with the intention of shoving most Cbets.  This flop lead/shove may be the easily overlooked best possible move, but I'm not sure.  We've got a few different opinions already.

NH, only thing I could see doing differently is open shoving flop. I don't see a case for bet-3betting, because I don't think many Villains will have a raise-folding range in this spot. The main disadvantage of going for a check-raise is that the flop may check around often, but that's not really a bad thing, as there are a lot of good turn cards for you.

For those saying shove-or-fold pre, I'd be curious to hear an explanation of how folding could be better than calling.

Hadn't noticed the SB had called. With the SB calling I'd probably play it exactly the same way.
