Live Tourney. 40 players. $120 Buy in.

16 left. Top 5 pay.

Blinds are: 800-1600

V Stack is about 40k

V2 stack is about 14k

Hero Stack is about 70k.

Villain NOTES:

V1 is 65 yr old man. Probably a bit nitty pre-flop but seems to have an over-value his hand leak going on now and again.

V2 is 55 y/o old man playing incredibly straight fwd and very passive.

2 hands prior V raised similarly pre-flop> Made a very simlar bet and called his opponents AI (which would have left him severely crippled) with AJ on a Q27 rainbow board.

Pre-flop: UTG limps. V raises to 4.5k. Hero calls with JJ. V2 calls UTG folds.

POT= about 16k.

FLOP: 6club7club9spade

V bets 8k… HERO?

Not sure why you didn’t 3bet this strong hand pre.  I would have.  So the Vill cbets.  I would call and see the turn.  Obviously, an 8 or any club would be super nasty card for you.

*V bets 8k.  I CALL, esp on that board.

That’s not obvious to me. Anyway, I agree about 3b pre, and it’s a pretty easy shove on the flop. Hero has an overpair with an SPR of ~2.

Yes. I would shove here too, over a bet. If the villain is as fond of A-high as you say, he would love to get 2 chances to catch up with his A-T. If you call the flop and turn bricks, you might not be able to get full value.

I forget V2 is still behind making me like a raise/shove more than a call.

Why is this easy? What about a raise? Since this is live play I wonder if playing his stack wouldn’t be better than playing the pot size. With V having ~27K left after his raise, we could 2.5x to 20K (4 chips?) and give him a chance to make more mistakes. There might be a few less folds. He may chase before realizing he has committed himself on the turn. Or, he may decide he wants to call because it doesn’t look like much and geez the pot is big, then count it out, realize there won’t be much left and decide to “I guess I’m all-in”.

Does that make sense?

I partly agree with your 4 chips line, but playing live, I always felt that a shove seems more draw-y than a 3-bet and could get paid off easier.

Like MovieFX, I’d also like to know why this is an easy shove?

Are there any articles or videos on the site that can explain stack to pot ratio considerations to make this clear?

Thanks

I thinks he is refering to the pot size, I could be wrong tow:

“V2 stack is about 14k”

“POT= about 16k.”

But V2 call pre, leaving him with 9.5k? now I have confused myself laugh

Yes, you are more shallow with V2, but with V1 the SPR is roughly 2.

I don’t know what’s available on TPE specifically, but here’s a decent overview of SPR: …..-strategy/.
