Hi all, I'm new to TPE, and figured I'd start off with

what is probably a simple question.  I've recently started grinding the $2.50 180 mans, and I'm doing pretty well over an extremely small sample size (Just over 100 tourneys, 3 wins, 1 2nd, 15% ROI.)  Anyway, was watching a couple of Big Dogs video's and might have gotten something wrong in my head.

Here's the hand:

PokerStars – $2.28+$0.22|10/20 NL – Holdem – 9 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BTN: 75 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 1)
SB: 75 BB (VPIP: 26.09, PFR: 10.53, 3Bet Preflop: 11.11, Hands: 23)
BB: 75 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: -, Hands: 1)
UTG: 75 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: -, Hands: 1)
UTG+1: 75 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: -, Hands: 1)
UTG+2: 75 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: -, Hands: 1)
MP: 75 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: -, Hands: 1)
Hero (MP+1): 75 BB
CO: 75 BB (VPIP: 100.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 1)

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has  Adiamond Qspade

fold, fold, fold, fold, Hero raises to 3 BB, CO calls 3 BB, fold, SB raises to 8 BB, fold, Hero raises to 75 BB and is all-in, fold, SB calls 67 BB and is all-in

Flop: (154 BB, 2 players)  3diamond 2spade 9spade
Turn%s: (154 BB, 2 players)  Tspade
River%s: (154 BB, 2 players)  3club

[spoil]SB shows  Qheart Qdiamond  (Two Pair, Queens and Threes) (Pre 70%, Flop 82%, Turn 75%)
Hero shows  Adiamond Qspade  (One Pair, Threes) (Pre 30%, Flop 18%, Turn 25%)
SB wins 154 BB
[/spoil]

So here's my thought process.  The small 3 Bet was kind of odd to me.  I figured, if I just flatted, then I'm folding to a CBet on almost any board that doesn't have a Q or and A.  If the board is Q high, then I'm probably good, but if the board is A high, then I could just end up putting more money into a pot that I'm already behind in.  Right now however, if I jam, I potentially fold out some medium to small pocket pairs that are ahead of me in a race, potentially fold out the dominating AK (though rarely, I know) and because it's a $2.50 there's the chance that I get the donkey call with hands like QJ, KQ, and the like.

Or, maybe I'm just another fish jamming the first hand of the tournement with AQ and getting crushed.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

small 3bets OOP are more times than not nutted hands eg QQ+ and AK. Its a tough discipline to fold a hand as strong as AQ pre flop but early on its almost mandatory. I might be tempted to see a flop with AQs to see if I can flop the world but I'm not getting married to it.

Its quite old now but HitthePanda has doena series on 180mans, much of his basic strategy is still valid.

It's prolly a fold preflop, but calling the 3bet is okay without being a leak IMO. However it's never a hand we want to get in in this spot.

Ok, thanks guys.  I think I knew it was a fold here.  Just one of those times I got something dumb stuck in my head and was trying to find a way to convince myself that my play wasn't spectacularly awefull.

Now that I'm convince that it WAS spectacularly awefull, I'm not going to do it again! 😀

i dont hate a call here given we are in position against the 3bettor, but i do think folding pre is by far the best option
